Virginia has more than 25 colleges that teach AutoCAD and CAD courses. Some schools have only one course while others have a selection of progressively advancing courses. This article discusses the 10 largest public and private, not-for-profit schools in Virginia that offer these courses.

Central Virginia Community College

There are four CAD courses offered as part of the engineering technology programs at Central Virginia Community College in Lynchburg. The Survey of Computer-Aided Drafting course is an introduction to computer-aided drafting equipment, concepts, components and operations. Computer-Aided Drafting and Design I and II courses cover the application and use of the equipment, technology, CAD-based drawing and advanced CAD operation. The Technical Drafting II course applies manual drafting principles to computer-aided drafting in two-dimensional drawings.

J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College

J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College (JSRCC) has three campuses in Richmond. JSRCC offers a Computer-Aided Design Specialist Certificate. Courses include computer-aided drafting I, II, and III.

John Tyler Community College

Situated in Chester, John Tyler Community College offers a Computer-Aided Drafting and Modeling Career Studies Certificate. This is an 18-credit program with coursework such as computer-aided drafting and design I and II.

Lord Fairfax Community College

Lord Fairfax Community College is located in Middletown and offers a drafting certificate. Courses include architectural blueprint reading, parametric solid modeling I and II, and engineering graphics.

Northern Virginia Community College

Annandale is the home of Northern Virginia Community College, which has several engineering technology programs that provide CAD courses. Computer Aided Drafting and Design I introduces drafting concepts, equipment and operation. Computer Aided Drafting and Design II-III addresses advanced computer-aided drafting operations and develops CAD proficiency using more advanced drawing functions. Computer Aided Drafting III focuses on programming and geometric modeling. Computer Applications for Surveyors and Technicians teaches students how to use CAD to make technical calculations and drafting for surveying and site analysis. The Computer Aided Digital Terrain Modeling and Earthworks course teaches students how to apply their 3-D CAD skills toward digital terrain modeling.

Piedmont Virginia Community College

Situated in Charlottesville , Piedmont Virginia Community College offers a Technical Drawing course that teaches CAD modeling and drawing detail used in conventional drafting practices. This course may also include parametric modeling.

Southside Virginia Community College

A smaller college in Alberta, Southside Virginia Community College offers two computer-aided drafting and design courses. The Computer Aided Drafting and Design I course introduces computer-aided drafting equipment, concepts and operation of a typical CAD system. The Computer Aided Drafting and Design II course teaches advanced CAD operations and production drawings.

Thomas Nelson Community College

Successively advanced CAD courses are offered at Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton. Starting with Engineering Drawing Fundamentals I, students are introduced to drawing principles, as well as basic techniques and theory of dimensioning and drawing. These skills are advanced in the Engineering Drawing Fundamentals II course. The Computer Aided Drafting and Design II that teaches production drawings and advanced CAD operations. Advanced Technical Drafting I introduces advanced techniques in 2-D and 3-D drawing. Finally, the Computer Aided Modeling and Rendering I course teaches 3-D modeling and animation techniques in architectural designs.

Tidewater Community College

Norfolk-based Tidewater Community College offers three separate programs for CAD. Computer-Aided Drafting and Design Technology is offered as a certificate program and also as a AAS degree. Additionally, there is AAS degree in CAD with a specialization in architectural drafting and design technology.

Virginia Western Community College

Virginia Western Community College is located in Roanoke. The school offers Computer-Aided Drafting and Design courses levels I through III. Building upon the basic skills learned in level I, students progress to completing production drawings and mastering advanced CAD operations to customization and advanced CAD software.
