Students in Indiana can choose from these 6 schools to learn about computer-aided design (CAD). AutoCAD, a type of computer-aided design software that is involved in 2-D and 3-D design and drafting, is taught in several of the programs at these schools.
Programs teaching CAD and AutoCAD can range from interior design, design, and architectural studies technology to civil engineering and mechanical engineering technology. Architectural studies technology and surveying technology programs also exist. Listed below is an overview of the programs at these 2-year colleges and 4-year universities, along with a comparison chart showing information at a glance.
Indiana State University
Indiana State University is located in Terre Haute. Although this school doesn't offer coursework specifically in AutoCAD, students have the opportunity to learn about CAD through the Department of Applied Engineering and Technology Management. Students can select a major in mechanical engineering technology that culminates in a Bachelor of Science (BS). The program emphasizes computer-aided-design as it relates to mechanical products and systems design. Coursework options include CAD fundamentals, technical graphics with CAD, and advanced CAD concepts.
Two courses in CAD, including one in how CAD relates to civil engineering technology and surveying, is part of a BS program in civil engineering technology. Students wishing to learn CAD without completing a degree program can select a minor in computer-aided design and drafting.
Indiana University - Bloomington
With 8 campuses across the state, this Bloomington-based school serves as the main campus for Indiana University. Students seeking a career in the interior design field can complete AutoCAD training through a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design program. The program includes a 3-credit course in digital architectural drawing that focuses on 2-D design using AutoCAD. The program also includes an advanced course that deals with CAD as it relates to 3-D modeling and visualization, animation, image processing, and multimedia.
The interior design program offers students the opportunity to participate in design projects with Habitat for Humanity through a partnership agreement. In addition, students can participate in various special projects and design competitions by joining the Design Studies Student Organization.
Indiana University - Purdue University Fort Wayne
This Fort Wayne university is the 5th largest in the state, with multiple programs available for prospective CAD professionals through the Department of Manufacturing and Construction Engineering Technology and Interior Design. Students interested in learning CAD and AutoCAD as it relates to the interior design field can earn a Bachelor of Science in the field. The program has students complete coursework in CAD software for construction graphics and AutoCAD technology for interiors. The bachelor's program consists of more studio classes where students can further develop skills in AutoCAD technology.
Other related programs include a mechanical engineering technology associate's and bachelor's programs. Topics covered in these programs include technical graphics communication and digital graphics using CAD, computer-aided tool and fixture design for CAD systems, architectural engineering construction using CAD models, and CAD modeling and design.
Ivy Tech Community College
Based in Indianapolis, this public school offers undergraduate training in design technology through certificate and associate's degree programs. While specific courses in AutoCAD are not offered, students receive basic and advanced training in CAD. The design technology major is designed for students wishing to pursue employment in areas such as computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM), architectural design, or computer graphics. The Technical Certificate program requires 31-33 credits to complete. The 60-credit Associate of Applied Science (AAS) program prepares graduates for employment, while the 60-credit Associate of Science program is for those who wish to transfer to a 4-year school. Training can be completed at multiple campuses throughout the state.
Purdue University - North Central (now merged with Purdue University Northwest)
Based in the rural town of Westville, this university has 4 colleges and offers programs from the certificate to the baccalaureate level. Through the Department of Engineering Technology, students can earn a certificate, or an associate's or bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering technology. The certificate program includes courses in CADD and technical graphics communication. These courses are also covered in the associate's degree program. For the bachelor's program, students complete more advanced study in areas such as product design and specification using CAD, and the use of CAD systems in industrial enterprise. Specific courses in AutoCAD are not offered.
Located in the remote town of Vincennes, this university is the oldest in the state. Through the College of Technology, aspiring AutoCAD technology professionals can complete an Associate of Science program in architectural studies technology/CAD or in surveying technology with a concentration in civil drafting/CAD. The architectural studies/CAD program prepares students to work as architectural technicians in areas such as city zoning and planning, architectural engineering, and residential designing. Students complete coursework in basic and intermediate architectural CAD that includes AutoCAD. An advanced CAD course is also part of the program, as well as instruction in architectural drafting and architectural drawing. Students enrolled in the civil drafting/CAD concentration learn how to create architectural renderings and design surveying applications using CAD.
