There are a limited number of barber schools in Illinois. Both schools are private for-profit and located in Chicago. Full-time students may be able to complete a barbering program in a little over a year. Hands-on training working on mannequins and real clients is a large part of these programs.
Success Schools LLC
Success Schools LLC services both Illinois and Indiana, providing aspiring barbers with training and skills. Working professionals will have plenty of flexible scheduling options, as the barber program is offered on both a full- and part-time basis. Day classes are also available, making it even easier to fit courses around busy schedules. Students in this program will benefit from a diverse curriculum, which consists of 1500 clock hours and addresses basic topics such as sanitation and hairstyling, along with more complex concepts such as salesmanship and business management.
The Barber Academy
The training program at The Barber Academy consists of a blend of general theory courses and practical application courses. Theory classes provide instruction through lectures, discussions, and demonstrations as students learn about scalp care, anatomy and physiology, and bacteriology. Practical application courses allow students to acquire hands-on experience in areas like shaving, beard trimming, comb techniques, facial and scalp massage, and clipper cutting. The program culminates in a final exam in which students demonstrate the skills and knowledge that they've acquired throughout their studies.
Lockhart's Barber College
LBC offers a state-of-the-art training facility and flexible scheduling options. Students are required to attend at least 24 hours of instruction each week, but these hours can be completed at any time, with the exception of a mandatory class on Tuesdays from 9-1. The institute also offers a challenging and well-rounded courseload, with students learning about barbershop management, hair coloring, and chemical texture services.
Larry's Barber College
The college, located in Chicago, has a stylist training program that prepares future barbers for the licensure process in Illinois. Full-time students can complete the program in 16 months. Students take part in 1,350 hours of practical training and 150 hours of barber training. Students learn how to use barber equipment like razors and scissors. There are also a number of theory classes that cover anatomy, barber history and chemistry. By the end of the program, students learn how to cut and color hair.
Regency Beauty Institute
RBI's Studio Luma program equips aspiring barbers with fundamental knowledge through several innovative and interactive teaching methods. In addition to hands-on training, students also learn by watching videos, consulting with professors, and taking open-book tests. Students in this program also receive a cosmetology kit, which features plenty of cosmetology supplies including shears, color bowls, and brushes.
In general, students who want to become barbers must finish a state-approved training program, complete 1,500 hours of training and pass an examination to receive a license.
