Students have a lot of options when it comes to barber schools in California. While it's difficult to find public barber schools, there are a number of private schools that are approved by the state of California. Barber training courses and programs are available at 2-year beauty schools and generally take a year or less to complete. Students learn through hands-on methods and are often prepared for the licensure process.

Adrian's Beauty College

Located in Modesto, students can enroll in this cosmetology course and learn to cut and color hair. The school has a few locations in California. In general, students gain hands-on experience in working with all hair types. There's an emphasis on how to properly shampoo and treat hair. Students also learn about shaves, beards and hair pieces.

Coachella Valley Beauty College

Students who enroll in this La Quinta school receive 1,500 hours of barber training. The course includes lessons on shaves, facials, shampoos and haircuts. There are also theoretical lessons that cover the skin, scalp, and hair. Students learn about bacteria, safety and sanitation. The entire program is hands-on so students learn to work with barbering tools.

International School of Beauty

Students can complete the 1,500 hours of required barber training through this Palm Desert school. The curriculum focuses on how to cut, style and treat hair of all types. Special attention is given to shampoos, hair weaving, hair processing, and hair relaxing. Students learn about shaves and rest facials, as well. The program teaches students about chemistry, anatomy, physiology, and sanitation.

Lancaster Beauty College

This Lancaster beauty college offers a barber training program that can be completed in less than ten months. Students learn to cut and color hair, as well as how to style and relax all types of men and women's hair. Lessons also cover rest facials, shaving and beard trimming. Students who complete the 1,500 hours of training are prepared for the licensure process.

Newberry School of Beauty

Located in Granada Hills, this school's cosmetology course can be completed in about a year. Students learn how to style and cut hair for men and women. There are a number of lessons on facials, hair treatments, and bleaching. In addition, students learn about chemistry, electricity, bacteriology, and anatomy. The course emphasizes safety, sanitation, and health. By the end of the program, students can prepare for the licensure process in California.

Paul Mitchell: The School

This Costa Mesa school offers a three-phase barbering program for students who want to prepare for the licensure process in California. The school offers numerous locations in California. Students begin the program by learning how to work with clients so that they can best meet their hair needs. From there, students learn business management skills that cover time management, retail and sales skills. The last piece of the program teaches students the various hairstyling techniques that work for men and women.

Western Beauty Institute

Students who enroll at this Panorama City school can take the barber course and earn 1,500 hours of training. Students learn about the barbering industry, including the rules, regulations, and guidelines for barbers. A large part of the class centers on hairstyling, haircutting and hair treatments. There's also information on facials, shaves, and shampoos. By the end of the program, students are prepared for the California licensure process.

Career Requirements

Barbers who want to practice in California must hold a license. To obtain a license, students need to attend a state-recognized barber school and complete 1,500 hours of barber training. Upon completion of the barber training program, students must pass the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology examinations to receive a license.
