Essential Information

Maryland has few schools that offer barbering programs. All of the schools listed below feature programs or refresher courses specifically in barbering. Students complete relevant coursework and also gain practical experience through time spent in laboratories. They may have the option to study full- or part-time.

Avara's Academy of Hair Design

Students pursuing Avara's Academy of Hair Design 1,200-hour barbering and styling program in Baltimore explore the barbering field in course topics such as hair coloring, shaving, barber science and barbershop management. In the shaving class, students learn to identify the fourteen separate shaving areas, while the hair coloring class includes instruction in hair lightening. Students also take a course in which they review the Maryland State Board's laws, rules and regulations regarding barbering and prepare to take the State Board's exams. This school also offers a 160-hour refresher course for former professionals looking to get back into the barbering field.

Bladensberg Barber School

Located in Bladensberg, this school's barbering program instructs students in theoretical and practical methods used in hair cutting and styling. Classes are offered both during the day and evening hours. Graduates of this program meet the minimum 1,200 hours needed to take the exam required for becoming licensed as a barber.

International Academy of Hair Design and Technology

Located in Baltimore, International Academy of Hair Design and Technology, while running out of its own location, uses the same barbering and styling curriculum used by Avara's Academy of Hair Design. Along with various other skills, students explore hair and scalp care, as well as chemical texture services. This program also covers hairpiece maintenance and techniques in the cleaning, coloring and styling of hairpieces. As with Avara's program, students take a course that prepares them for the state board examinations. A refresher course is also available for professionals looking to update their skills.

Career Requirements

Curricula for the following four programs centers around Maryland's state requirements for obtaining a barbering license and each school requires hands-on time in the salon for program completion. These programs also fulfill the 1,200 hour minimum requirement set by the Maryland Higher Education Commission and the Maryland State Board of Barber Examiners.
