Beauty courses are mostly offered at vocational schools in New Jersey. These programs may be available full or part time, and during the day or in the evening. Most can be completed in a year or less if taken full time. Students will need to complete an interview to enter a program. In addition, certificate students may have the opportunity to complete an internship.
Although New Jersey has over 25 schools offering training, the 5 outlined below are this state's non-profit institutions. Many of these schools provide options for high school students pursuing careers in beauty professions, though the following descriptions focus on post-secondary options.
Monmouth County Vocational School District
This 10-month adult cosmetology and hairstyling program is offered at the Neptune campus of Monmouth County Vocational School District. Students receive training in various hairstyling and cosmetology skills, and earn the required 1,000 hours for licensing. Class options are available early in the day, or late afternoon into evening.
Montclair State University
Located in Montclair, this school makes a certificate in makeup artistry available to students working towards degrees, or as a stand-alone option to students who aren't seeking degrees. The 18 semester hours of required courses include fundamentals of makeup, clothing/culture study, advanced makeup techniques and an industry internship. In addition, aspiring makeup artists choose electives from courses in visual arts, art history, textile/apparel industry study and stage makeup techniques.
Morris County Vocational School District
Morris County Vocational School District offers its cosmetology program at the Denville-based Morris County School of Technology. Classes run Mondays through Thursdays, in addition to Saturdays, from 2:00-9:00 P.M. Candidates will provide references and take part in an interview to enter this program that spans approximately 11 months. While earning their 1,000 required hours, students learn skills in hair care, color, permanents, facials and nail care.
Ocean County Vocational Technical School
Toms River's Ocean County Vocational Technical School has a cosmetology program that may be completed in 10 months by attending 5 days a week, from 2:00-7:00 P.M., or in 20 months through attendance on Mondays, Tuesdays and alternate Fridays. Students learn skills in skin/nail services, business management, hair services and barbering. Upon completion of this 1,000-hour program, future cosmetologists will be eligible to take the State Board exam.
Raritan Valley Community College
Branchburg-based Raritan Valley Community College's continuing education department offers a 10-month, 1,200-hour cosmetology program. Applicants take part in an interview to enter this full-time, day program. Students practice their newly acquired skills in the Cosmetology Student Salon.
Union County Vocational Technical School
Located in Scotch Plains, this school's full-time adult program offers a 10-month cosmetology course of study. Students learn skills for the care of hair, skin, nails and scalp in classes that meet from 2:00-8:00 P.M. Completion of this course will fulfill the state's 1,000-hour licensing requirement.
Beauty professionals who provide services in New Jersey involving hair, makeup, massage, nails and wigs must be licensed through the Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling. Applicants show program completion with the minimum number of hours for the desired license. Out-of-state applicants provide documentation of a completed program or sufficient experience. Licensing candidates must then pass an exam in theory and practical skills.
