Gaston College

Morning and afternoon classes are available to cosmetology students at Gaston College. The school offers diploma and associate degree options that can prepare individuals for the state board cosmetology licensing exam.

Cosmetology Diploma

The diploma program in cosmetology takes 48 credit hours to complete. The cosmetology courses at this school cover cosmetology concepts, computerized salon operations, salon work and general psychology.

Associate of Applied Science in Cosmetology

Gaston College also offers a 71-credit cosmetology associate degree program that includes additional general education and elective courses. This program is delivered over 5 semesters with a focus on cosmetology concepts and hands-on learning in the salon. Courses also include computer skills to prepare the student for technology used in the salon business setting. The Gaston AAS in Cosmetology is licensed by the M.C. Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners.

Stanly Community College

Students who graduate from the cosmetology program offered at Stanly Community College are typically qualified to take the State Board of Cosmetic Arts examination. Depending on the number of general education courses that students take, learners may earn a certificate, a diploma or an associate degree in cosmetology. The school also provides a cosmetology instructor certificate program for licensed cosmetologists.

Associate of Applied Science in Cosmetology

The scientific and artistic principles of cosmetology are both stressed at this school. Students receive hands-on practice in cosmetology through the program's coursework. Students can take classes on professional development, people skills, small business management and contemporary hair coloring. There are also several opportunities to participate in cooperative work experiences. The associate degree program requires the same 1,500 cosmetology contact hours that the school's certificate and diploma programs do, but the degree program comes with additional general education classes in subjects like computers and business.

Cosmetology Instructor Certificate

Students in the cosmetology instructor program learn how to create and evaluate tests issued in the classroom. Learners also explore different methods of teaching in order to handle students with a variety of learning strengths.

Rowan-Cabarrus Community College

In addition to a cosmetology degree program, a cosmetology instructor certificate is available at this college. There are also study options for students interested in nail technology and esthetics.

Associate of Applied Science in Cosmetology

This school provides a simulated salon environment in which students can practice. The program's curriculum covers multicultural cosmetology practices, chemical processes, business and computer principles, professional imaging, hair design, nail care and skin care. The associate degree program takes 67 credits to finish and can include classes in math, small business and public speaking. Diploma and certificate programs are offered and contain much of the same coursework in cosmetology without the general education requirements.

Cosmetology Certificate

The classes for the 34-credit cosmetology certificate program cover basic cosmetology concepts and salon fundamentals. The certificate can be completed in three semesters.

Other Schools

About 42 miles from downtown Charlotte is Mitchell Community College, which offers certificate and diploma options in cosmetology, cosmetology instruction, nail technology and esthetics technology. Another option is Cleveland Community College, which is roughly 43 miles from Charlotte's downtown area and has certificate and diploma programs in cosmetology, cosmetology instruction, nail technology, esthetics technology and esthetics instruction.
