Chattahoochee Technical College (CTC)

CTC is comprised of eight locations scattered throughout several counties and offers two associate's degree programs for students interested in biomedical engineering technology. Students interested in the electrical and computer engineering technology program that specializes in biomedical technology should be aware that the program is only offered at the school's North Metro campus.

Associate of Applied Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology - Biomedical Engineering Technology Specialization

CTC's electrical and computer engineering technology program is designed to enhance students' skills in science, math, engineering and electronics. In addition to general education courses, students take courses in circuit analysis, digital systems and electronic circuits. Students then take a set of four courses focused on biomedical technology, including anatomy and medical equipment function/operation. This program also includes a capstone course as well as a medical systems internship.

Emory University

The biomedical degree programs at Emory University are administered through the Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering, which is a joint venture between Emory University's School of Medicine and Georgia Tech's College of Engineering.

Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering

The bachelor's degree program in biomedical engineering is designed to provide students with a multidisciplinary background that includes ethical standards and a passion for self-motivated education. Course topics may include systems physiology, bioengineering statistics, cellular physiology and biomedical systems. Graduates of this program should possess a range of professional skills, such as a proficiency in communicating with individuals across fields and professions, the ability to evaluate data gathered from experiments and the ability to solve complex problems across disciplines.

Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering

This program is comprised of a series of core biomedical engineering courses, advanced seminars, teaching assistantships and a series of ethics and professional development courses. Advanced seminar and research topics may include biomaterials medicine, medical imaging, neuroengineering and immunoengineering. Students must also complete and defend a dissertation within five years of entering the program. Graduates of this program can gain a strong proficiency in mathematical modeling for biomedical research, an ability to critically analyze scientific manuscripts and the ability to construct thoroughly crafted questions to guide research.

Georgia Institute of Technology

This school offers a bachelor's degree and Ph.D. program through the Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering that's operated jointly between Georgia Tech and Emory University. Georgia Tech also offers a Master of Biomedical Innovation and Development, which focuses more on the business aspects of biomedical device development than the engineering concepts used to create the devices.

Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering

This 131-credit hour program can be completed in four years and provides students with skills in math, science and engineering. Technical elective options may include biomedical instrumentation, biofluid mechanics and neuroengineering. Students must also complete a capstone design course that allows them to work with their peers to complete a biomedical engineering project.

Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering

Students who enter this program are required to complete it within nine semesters of beginning their studies. The program begins with a core course designed to develop a student's critical-thinking skills. This course is followed by at least 21 credit hours of bioscience and engineering coursework. All students are required to work as teaching assistants. The latter part of the program requires students to defend their dissertation through an oral examination.
