El Centro College

El Centro College offers accounting courses at all three of its campuses. Students can choose from two certificate programs and one associate program.

Accounting Clerk Certificate

The accounting clerk certificate can be completed in only one semester. Courses in the program include principles of accounting, computerized accounting, mathematics and composition. The credits earned in this program can be used towards the associate degree requirements if a student wishes to continue his or her education.

Accounting Assistant Certificate

The accounting assistant certificate program requires 30 credit hours, which may be applied to the accounting associate degree program. This program can be completed in two semesters. Students must complete courses in managerial accounting, computerized accounting and financial accounting as well as humanities/fine arts. This program also includes coursework designed to improve the student's communication skills.

Associate in Applied Sciences in Accounting

The associate degree in accounting requires students to complete 60 credit hours. Courses in the program include the principles of accounting, computerized accounting and economics. Students also take an intermediate accounting course. Students are awarded the accounting clerk and accounting assistant certificates as they complete the necessary courses throughout the program.

Mountain View College

Mountain View College serves the southwest area of Dallas. The school offers three certificate programs as well as an associate degree program with accounting training.

Accounting Assistant Certificate

Students can enroll in the accounting assistant program that includes courses in computer applications, accounting, business math, computerized accounting and business and technical electives. The courses in this program may be applied to the associate degree in accounting.

Accounting Clerk Certificate

This program can be complete in one semester and includes courses in computerized accounting and business math. Students also get to select one business or technical elective. The courses in this program can count towards the associate degree in accounting.

Associate in Applied Sciences in Accounting

This program includes courses in accounting, business math, computerized accounting and economics. The program requires students to complete communication courses, such as public speaking and composition. The degree program also includes accounting specialty courses like intermediate accounting, federal income tax, managerial accounting and specialty topics in accounting.

Accounting Advanced Technical Certificate

The advanced accounting technical certificate qualifies students with a bachelor's degree in another area for the Uniform CPA examination. Students must complete the foundations of accounting and operations disclosure course before gaining admittance to this certificate program. Required courses include federal income taxes for partnerships and corporations, financial accounting reporting, mergers and acquisitions, and accounting research. Students can select their electives from a limited list, which includes forensic accounting, accounting theory and financial statement analysis.

Tarrant County College District

The Tarrant County College District (TCCD) has four campuses with accounting courses in the Dallas area. The school offers two accounting assistant programs plus a business associate degree with an accounting assistant specialization.

Accounting Assistant Certificate I

This accounting assistant certificate program requires students to complete 15 credit hours, which can be done in one semester. Courses include financial accounting, English composition, computerized accounting and business computer applications.

Accounting Assistant Certificate II

This two-semester program requires students to complete 24 credit hours. Courses include financial and managerial accounting, English composition, mathematics and computerized accounting applications. Students must also complete six credit hours in business electives.

Associate of Applied Science in Business Administration - Accounting Assistant Specialization

The associate degree in business administration for accounting assistants requires students to complete 60 credit hours. Students must complete general foundation courses, including English composition, United States government and humanities. The technical foundation for the business administration program includes coursework in financial and managerial accounting, business ethics and management communications. Accounting assistant courses cover computerized accounting, computerized accounting applications and electives in business. This program is available at four of TCCD's campuses.

Other Schools

The Dallas County Community College District also offers accounting degree and certificate programs at five other institutions that are all within a 20-minute drive of downtown Dallas.
