The Boston area has a remarkably diverse array of Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs. The three schools highlighted in this article are all private institutions located within 20 minutes of the city's center.   • Located around five miles from downtown Boston, Boston College is one of the more affordable options among the major institutions offering MBA programs in the area. The school offers full-time and part-time MBA coursework schedules.
  • Along with being the oldest, Harvard University's MBA program is among the most prestigious of its kind in the country. The campus is located less than four miles from central Boston.
  • Boston University, about two miles from the city's downtown, offers multiple master's degree programs in business administration, including one focusing on the health sector.

Boston College

Boston College's full-time and evening MBA programs are administered through the school's Carroll School of Management, which focuses on critical thinking and problem solving while preparing students to successfully adapt to change.

Full-time MBA

This is a two-year degree program designed for students with the time to pursue academic study full-time. There is particular emphasis placed on intimacy and community. Students are required to choose one of a variety of specializations in areas such as corporate finance, global management, asset management and financial reporting. In addition to coursework, students may also learn through internship opportunities during their last year of the program.

Part-time MBA

This part-time program is designed to provide professional students a flexible academic schedule for pursuing MBA training. Evening students choose among the same series of specializations and take the same courses required by full-time students. These courses may cover topics such as statistics, operations management, accounting, economics and information technology. In addition, evening students, as well as full-time students, are allowed to select from among a range of real-world study experiences that include study abroad electives that take place in locations around the world.

Harvard University

Harvard offers an MBA degree program through its business school, which bases student instruction on the case method. The case method, an educational tool created by Harvard faculty in 1925, is designed to teach students business concepts and skills by immersing them in the real-world management problems of actual organizations.


This is a comprehensive two-year program designed to provide students with expertise in many aspects of business management through direct exposure to real-world business problems and scenarios. Students may choose to focus their studies in one of a range of academic units, such as finance, marketing, accounting and organizational behavior. Specific course topics may cover areas such as financial reporting, corporate accountability and strategy. Moreover, these courses may be divided into several curriculum fields, each of which focuses on an overarching theme, such as leadership, global intelligence and integrative intelligence.

Boston University

Boston University administers MBA programs through its business school, which offers seven graduate degrees and nine areas of specialization. The department places particular focus on organizational and community value.

Two-Year MBA Program

This program is designed to provide students with an interactive, global education in business. Students in this MBA program are divided into groups, called cohorts, with whom they'll study and engage course topics. However, Boston University's cohort groups are demonstrably smaller, between 50-55 students, than Boston College's. Students may choose to concentrate their studies in areas such as finance, operations and leadership. In addition to classroom-based learning, students may choose to enhance their learning experience with summer internships.

Health Sector MBA Program

This particular MBA program is designed to train future business leaders in areas such as biotechnology, health information, health systems and pharmaceuticals. In addition to conventional coursework, students gain an integrated education in both business and the health industry by engaging leaders and working in teams on practical issues. Courses in this program may cover areas such as medical diagnostics, health service delivery, health information technology and intellectual property.

Part-time MBA Program

This program is designed for working professionals. Students in this program are allowed to concentrate their studies in the same categories offered to other MBA students. Students can choose from three tracks: flex, cohort or accelerated core. Completion time ranges from 2-6 years, depending on the chosen track. Marketing management, organizational leadership, financial management and financial reporting are covered in all tracks.
