There are about 50 universities and community colleges in Texas that offer business accounting technology and general accounting programs. Most of the programs listed below lead to associate's degrees, but some schools offer bachelor's degrees. Ten of the largest schools offering programs are profiled.
Austin Community College District
Austin Community College District in Austin offers an Accounting Technician degree program. The 61-credit program focuses on accounting software, and students prepare for entry-level employment. Courses include databases, industry accounting and microeconomics. Students must also complete a capstone internship course.
Located in Farmers Branch, Brookhaven College offers an associate's degree in accounting. Students learn about sound accounting principles, and they will be able to qualify for entry-level employment or transferring opportunities. The program has courses on accounting software, word processing and business principles. A capstone accounting project is required.
Del Mar College
Del Mar College in Corpus Christi offers a paraprofessional accountant degree program. The program covers topics like payroll accounting, accounting applications and federal income taxes. A practicum is also required. Additionally, the school provides extracurricular activities like the Volunteer Tax Assistance program for practical experience. The college also offers an accounting technician certificate program.
El Paso Community College
This community college in El Paso offers an associate's degree in accounting. Courses range from accounting applications to payroll accounting. An accounting software capstone course is necessary. Students will earn a separate accounting applications certificate after completing a year of study.
Lee College in Baytown provides an associate's degree program in accounting technology. Students take courses in business math, computerized accounting applications and cost accounting. An internship or capstone course is needed. Graduates may qualify for bookkeeping jobs. Interested students may also complete an accounting technician certificate program.
San Antonio College
Located in San Antonio, this college provides an associate's degree program in accounting technology degree. The program is comprised of 69 credits and covers topics like basic accounting and computerized accounting. The college houses a business computer lab for student use.
St. Edward's University
Saint Edward's University in Austin offers a bachelor's degree in accounting information technology. The program takes five years to complete, and students major in computer information technology and accounting. Students take accounting, business and computer science courses. A senior research project is required.
St. Philips College
Located in San Antonio, St. Philips College provides an accounting technology associate's degree program, which is designed for entry-level employment. Students learn about word processing, databases and spreadsheets. Additional topics that are covered in the program include computerized accounting and microcomputer applications.
Tarrant County College District
Located in Fort Worth, Tarrant County College District offers an associate's degree program in accounting information management. This program provides the training needed to record, report and analyze accounting information. Students are taught accounting application technology, terminology, procedures and principles. They also learn communication and leadership skills. Courses include accounting applications and business tax accounting.
University of Texas at Brownsville
This university in Brownsville has a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting degree program. This program includes courses in information systems, data management, business communications and operations management. Students have access to a volunteer mentorship program. Other accounting courses focus on auditing, government accounting and income taxes. The university's accounting society offers numerous networking opportunities.
