Adult learners in California can receive comprehensive job training through programs generally lasting from 6-10 months, with many completed in 30-36 weeks. Studies can consist of classroom instruction combined with extensive project assignments. Some programs result in a certificate. Adults can enroll in programs in areas including office administration, nursing, electronics, computer technology, health care, and graphic arts.

Charles A. Jones Career Education Center

The Charles A. Jones Career and Education Center has been in operation for 40 years. Classes start every six weeks and are open to any adult over 18 in the Sacramento area. Student services include adult basic education, GED preparation and testing, ESL classes, academic counseling, career exploration and job placement assistance.

School of Court Reporting

This competency-based court reporting program focuses on skills adaptable to a variety of careers, such as captioner, proofreader and medical transcriber as well as court reporting. Instructional modules include keyboarding, transcription, legal terminology and editing.

Electronic Occupations

This school offers two career programs: heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) technician and home technology integrator. The 42-week, 1,260-hour HVAC tech program prepares graduates for passing HVAC licensure exams after which they may seek employment. The CISCO with Comp TIA A+ Preparation program consists of 1,080 hours of training over 36 weeks in areas that include telecommunications, home lighting and computer networking.

Office/Assistant Occupations

Administrative assistant, medical assistant, nursing assistant, and optometric assistant are the careers adults can pursue in this school. Depending on the specific program, office career courses involve between 5 and 30 weeks of instruction in key skills.

Vocational Nursing

This school offers a program to help students become a licensed vocational nurse (LVN). The California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians approves the vocational nursing program.

East San Gabriel Valley Regional Occupational and Technical Center

The East San Gabriel Valley Regional Occupational and Technical Center, in Los Angeles County, is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. This California career school is associated with a wide network of business and social support services to address students' needs for achieving their goals and securing rewarding employment. Assessment and counseling services assist adult students in choosing and completing one of the many career training paths offered.

Video Production & Digital Media

This course will help students learn about video editing software and how to use it properly. With projects and hands-on training, students will engage with digital media to ensure they understand how to utilize the right skills to succeed in the industry.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

The EMT certificate program will prepare students for entry-level positions in the field. Students must be at least 18 to enter the program, and they also will be required to pass a background check and provide proper documentation for up-to-date immunizations. An entrance exam will also be administered.

Microsoft Office Specialist

The purpose of this class is to prepare students to take the Microsoft Office Specialist exam. Also, students will learn common computer skills, while practicing with software programs like Microsoft Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint.

American Career College-Ontario

This institution focuses on healthcare. Diplomas are commonly conferred. Specific areas include massage therapy, pharmacy and assisting.

Massage Therapy Diploma

Students in this program will take courses in subjects like human anatomy and massage techniques. There is an accelerated program option to help students complete courses in a minimum of 9 months.

Optical Technician Diploma

This program is designed to help students enter entry-level positions as a technician or contact lens fitter. Students will learn how to conduct basic eye exams and fill prescriptions, among other skills.

Physical Therapist Assistant A.O.S.

This associate's level program prepares students to work with patients with limited mobility in medical and rehabilitation facilities. They will also receive preparation for the National Physical Therapy Examination for professional credentials.

California residents desiring career education can enroll in programs or courses offered by American Career College-Ontario, the East San Gabriel Valley Regional Occupational and Technical Center, and the Charles A.
