Cabrillo College

Located along the coast of Central California, Cabrillo College is a 2-year, public college serving over 11,000 students. The Medical Assistant Department offers a phlebotomy certificate program that provides students with phlebotomy training and medical assisting skills.

Phlebotomy Technician Skills Certificate

Throughout this 9-unit program, students learn to use phlebotomy equipment to draw blood from in- and out- patients. The curriculum incorporates a variety of venipuncture and safety techniques as well as effective methods for blood sample preservation. The detail-focused training includes courses in medical assisting, which prepare students to take vitals and complete patient charts or other relevant paperwork.

These skills are taught through lecture-based classes and experiential training. All students complete 120 hours of externship experience in a supervised healthcare environment, such as a physician's office or hospital.

Long Beach City College

Long Beach City College is a 2-year, public college located in the Southern California city of Long Beach. Eureka. The college's phlebotomy certificate is offered through its Allied Health Division.

Phlebotomy Technician Certificate

The phlebotomy certificate includes two courses that must be completed in two consecutive semesters. Upon completion of these courses, students are prepared to be certified phlebotomists in California.

The first course is conducted in a classroom and covers theory and phlebotomy procedures. Students practice procedures on mannequins and then on fellow students. The final course is a clinical lab required by the State of California for certification. Under supervision, students practice blood collection techniques on real patients in laboratories or medical centers.
