Essential Information

The A.A.S program in cardiac ultrasound technology takes about two years to complete. In these programs, students learn how to correctly use sonographic equipment, and laboratory courses provide opportunities for hands-on experience. Students will also hone their communication skills and patient care techniques. An on- or off-site clinical component may conclude the program; this requirement varies by school. Graduates may be qualified to pursue voluntary certification or professional credentials from such organizations as the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS). Cardiac echo assistants are more commonly referred to as echocardiographers, cardiac technicians or cardiac sonographers.

A high school diploma is the primary educational prerequisite for enrolling in a cardiac ultrasound technology degree program. Prospective students may also have to undergo background checks and drug screenings as part of the application process
