Essential Information

The Joint Review Committee on Education in Cardiovascular Technology accredits programs in Georgia, and several 2-year technical colleges in the state offer cardiovascular technology training. Students can pursue associate degree programs; however, echocardiography programs are also available at undergraduate certificate and diploma levels. Cardiovascular technology programs may have concentrations in such areas as vascular technology, invasive cardiac catheterization or non-invasive echocardiography. Clinical components are common to programs in this field.

Augusta Technical College

Augusta Technical College offers an Associate of Applied Science in Cardiovascular Technology that prepares graduates for careers in hospitals, clinics and doctor's offices. In addition to coursework, students complete clinical requirements at the Georgia Heart Institute at University Hospital. The program offers students the opportunity to take the National Registry in Cardiac Technology before graduation.

Central Georgia Technical College

Located in Macon, Central Georgia Technical College features an electrocardiography technician certificate and cardiovascular technology associate's degree. The electrocardiography technician certificate is 26 credits and includes courses in medical terminology, introduction to electrocardiography and electrocardiography practicum. The cardiovascular technology associate's degree is 94 credits and offers students the opportunity to pursue an invasive or non-invasive track. The invasive track focuses on cardiac catherization, while the non-invasive track has courses in electrocardiography.

Albany State University

Darton State College is located in Albany and offers an Associate in Science in Cardiovascular Technology that can be completed in six semesters. Courses include invasive cardiology, non-invasive cardiology and patient assessment. Students are also required to travel for practicums during the final two semesters.

Georgia Northwestern Technical College

Georgia Northwestern Technical College is located in Rome, and students at the school can pursue an echocardiography associate's degree. The echocardiography program has courses in sonography physics, cardiac anatomy, echocardiography and pediatric echocardiography.

Gwinnett Technical College

Located in Lawrenceville, Gwinnett Technical College offers a cardiovascular technology associate's degree that features concentrations in vascular technology, invasive cardiac catheterization and non-invasive echocardiography. Students in all concentrations take courses in drug calculations, cardiac anatomy and cardiac catheterization fundamentals. Courses in the vascular technology concentration include sectional anatomy, vascular fundamentals and normal sonography appearance. The invasive cardiac catheterization concentration includes four clinical requirements and courses in medical physics, hemodynamics and cardiac physiology. The non-invasive echocardiography features courses in sonographic instrumentation, pediatric echocardiography and echocardiography fundamentals.

Ogeechee Technical College

Ogeechee Technical College is located in Statesboro and has an echocardiography diploma program. The program is 84 credits and requires that students complete 2,413 hours. Courses in the program cover topics in cardiac anatomy, echocardiography fundamentals and sonographic physics. Three clinicals are also part of the curriculum.
