Carpet Installation Degree and Diploma Program Options

Formal training in carpet installation is not available through college certificate and diploma programs. Individuals interested in learning to install carpet can take advantage of apprenticeship training programs or can gain knowledge as carpet installation assistants.

Essential Information

Most carpet installers learn on-the-job as carpet installation assistants while gaining knowledge and skills. Training programs are also an option and are offered through the International Standards and Training Alliance for Floorcovering Professionals (INSTALL), which offers a focused carpet installation track. In apprenticeships and just over 30 lessons, participants learn to measure, cut, glue, tack and repair carpets.

Training Program in Carpet Installation

While enrolled in a training program for carpet installation, apprentices learn through lab exercises; each course may culminate in a skills exam. Students are taught safety procedures, the tools, and handling methods in carpet installation. Besides techniques for stretching carpet and laying carpet over steps, other topics of study include:

  • Work surface preparations
  • Padding fitting
  • Techniques for seam cutting
  • Methods for applying glue, staples and adhesive strips
  • Measuring accurately for the installation process
  • Methods for smoothly transitioning between flooring types and seams

Employment Outlook and Salary Information

The median annual salary for carpet installers was $37,220 in 2015, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov). From 2014-2024, carpet installers were predicted to experience a 5% decrease in job growth. With advanced training, carpet installers can become carpet installation managers, cost and materials estimators or carpet sales representatives.

Continuing Education

Often, contracting companies that employ carpet installers provide training in carpet installation. Additionally, individuals who complete a training program may earn a professional certificate, such as the one offered to students who complete INSTALL's entire floor covering program.

Aspiring carpet installers can gain the skills, training and experience they need through an apprenticeship program in carpet installation at the International Standards and Training Alliance for Floorcovering Professionals.
