Certification Class Overview

When considering enrolling in a certification class, it can be helpful to find out about the fields in which they are offered, as well as program length variations and some possible formats. Some professions don't require an undergraduate degree, but instead may expect individuals to pass a certification exam in order to obtain entry-level employment. Many colleges and universities offer standalone courses, certificate programs, and diploma programs that can prepare students for professional certification.

Schools offer classes and programs that prepare students for licensure and/or certification in many fields, including:

  • Massage therapy
  • Emergency medical care
  • Nursing assistance
  • Cosmetology
  • Skin care
  • Computer technology

Students who want to become an emergency medical technician (EMT) at the basic level must take several classes or complete a certificate program at a college or EMT training facility. Graduates are prepared to take certification tests administered by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). Likewise, students may complete a certificate or diploma program in massage therapy that offers preparation for the certification exam administered by their respective state or by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB).

Program Length

The number of class hours that a student takes depends on the area of study. Licensure requirements for program length may also vary by state or locality. For example, students taking classes to become a certified nursing assistant (CNA) may be required to complete at least 75 hours of classes before taking a certification exam. Education programs for massage therapists vary but may require up to 500 hours of classes and training that lead to certification. Prospective EMTs at the basic level may train for up to three months.

Program Formats

Many certification programs consist of a mixture of lecture-based sessions and hands-on training experiences. However, some certification preparation programs are also available in hybrid formats, where students can take the classroom portions of the class online. There are also programs that include courses in the evenings in order to accommodate the needs of students with work and other day-time obligations. Certification preparation courses that do not include hands-on training may be completed entirely online.

Individuals who want to prepare for professional licensure and/or certification in many fields can find training courses and programs that can provide the necessary education.
