Those seeking teacher certification in Pennsylvania need to have at least a bachelor's degree and have completed an approved teaching program. Teaching programs are commonly available in the fields of early childhood education, elementary education and secondary education. Those studying secondary education also choose a specific subject they wish to be licensed to teach, such as science, English, mathematics or history. All teaching programs include supervised student teaching experience as it is a requirement for state licensure. Graduates of these teacher preparation programs are eligible for Level 1 Pennsylvania instructional certification upon passing the state's required tests.

Pennsylvania State University

Pennsylvania State University's main campus, located in University Park, is at the state's center. The university's College of Education's offers several bachelor's degree programs that prepare students for teacher certification in Pennsylvania.

Penn State's elementary and kindergarten education program prepares graduates to work as teachers from the nursery through third grade level. The elementary education program earns the student eligibility for the level I instructional certificate for grades K-6. West Chester University of Pennsylvania is located in the borough of West Chester and is the third largest university in the southeastern region of Pennsylvania.
