Several public and private universities in Florida offer accounting programs designed to prepare students for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam. Studies are most commonly offered at the master's degree level, though combined bachelor's and master's degree programs are also available. Specializations may be available in taxation or auditing.

Florida Atlantic University

Florida Atlantic University, in Boca Raton, offers an accounting scholars program that allows students to simultaneously earn an undergraduate and graduate degree that meets the requirements to sit for the CPA examination in Florida. The school requires students to pass an accounting competency examination with a minimum score of 80% and have a minimum GPA of 3.3 to enter the scholars program. Students may also qualify for the CPA examination by completing the Master of Accounting program at Florida Atlantic University, which provides the additional credits and courses to meet the state's education requirements. FAU also offers a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting.

Florida International University

The Master of Accounting program at this school's Miami location provides students who have an undergraduate degree in accounting with the additional 30 credits required for a CPA license in Florida. Students may select a 10-month audit track or the 12-month tax track. The program also provides the additional 30 credits required beyond a bachelor's degree to meet Florida's CPA licensing requirements. FIU also offers a Bachelor of Accounting.

Florida State University

Based in Tallahassee, this university has a Master of Accounting program that satisfies the state's requirements for the CPA examination. Students without an undergraduate degree in accounting are required to complete core foundation courses to earn the master's degree. Master's degree students can specialize in corporate accounting, taxation, assurance services or accounting information systems. FSU also offers a Bachelor of Science in Accounting.

Nova Southeastern University

The Master of Accounting program at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale provides the additional credits and coursework in accounting required to sit for the CPA examination in Florida. The master's degree program requires students to complete 40 credits in courses such as financial accounting and reporting, accounting theory and financial statement analysis. The courses in the program are available online and on alternating weekends on campus. Nova southeastern also offers an undergraduate program that leads to a Bachelor of Science in Accounting.

Saint Leo University

Located in Saint Leo, this private university offers a Master of Accounting degree program that satisfies Florida's requirements for the CPA examination and licensure. The program prepares students for the examination and includes 30 credit hours of courses, such as corporate finance, fraud examination, federal taxation for businesses, advanced cost accounting and managerial economics. Students without an undergraduate degree in accounting may be required to complete prerequisite courses, such as auditing, intermediate accounting and business law. University of Central Florida

At Orlando's University of Central Florida, there is one degree programs that meets the state requirements for the CPA examination and licensure in the state, providing students the necessary undergraduate coursework in accounting. The Master of Science in Accounting program requires courses such as advanced managerial accounting, accounting theory and advanced accounting information systems. UCF also offers a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting.

University of Florida

A five-year combined bachelor's and master's degree program in accounting can be earned at this Gainesville university. The program provides students with the 150 credits required for the CPA examination and licensure in Florida. Students earn a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a Master of Accounting degree after completing the program. The school also offers a Master of Accounting degree program for students who have completed their undergraduate education in accounting at another school.

University of Miami

Students with an undergraduate degree in accounting can meet the Florida requirements for the CPA examination at this Coral Gables university. The Master of Accounting degree program provides the additional education needed for the Florida CPA examination with courses such as financial reporting, accounting research and auditing. Students can also qualify for the examination by completing the 30 semester-hour Master of Science in Taxation degree program. In addition, students can earn a Bachelor of Science in Accounting or a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting.

University of North Florida

The University of North Florida, in Jacksonville, Florida, offers a 33 semester-hour Master of Accountancy degree program that provides students with the education necessary to qualify for the CPA examination and licensing in Florida. The program allows students to concentrate their studies in taxation. Courses in the program include advanced financial management, taxation in business corporations, auditing theory and advanced accounting theory.

University of South Florida - Main Campus

The University of South Florida - Main Campus, located in Tampa, offers a Master of Accountancy degree program that meets the criteria for the CPA examination in Florida. Students may select a concentration in auditing systems, taxes or a generalist track. For students with an undergraduate degree in accounting, they may complete the program with 30 hours of courses in accounting and business. Undergrads can earn a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting.

Career Requirements

The Florida Department of Professional Regulation requires applicants for a CPA license to pass the Uniform CPA Examination, complete 150 semester hours of education in accounting and business and obtain one year of work experience. For individuals with an undergraduate degree, an additional 30 semester hours of upper-division business and accounting courses are needed to qualify for state licensure. USF also offers a program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Accounting.
