Essential Information

Maryland has several 2- and 4-year colleges that provide numerous child care training programs to prospective students, with specializations ranging from teaching to on-site management. Degree programs are commonly offered at the associate and bachelor's degree levels, and undergraduate certificate programs are also available.

These programs are characterized by various opportunities for fieldwork experience in off-campus settings, providing students with the chance to observe and interact with children on a regular basis. Similar coursework can be found within each of these degree programs since many foundational courses are necessary for state certification in early childhood education.


Anne Arundel Community College

Anne Arundel Community College is located in Arnold and offers an Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Development. Emphasizing development strategies and responsibilities, this degree program helps prepare students for careers as teachers and directors for child care centers and after-school programs. Required coursework includes children's literature, growth and development, observing and assessing young children, child care administration and educator portfolio development.

Baltimore City Community College

Located in Baltimore, this community college offers an Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education. Along with advancing students' observation and evaluation methods, this program features a curriculum that emphasizes the development of positive relationships between children and their environment. Students complete coursework in observing and recording children's behavior, activities and materials for children, nutrition, health, safety for children and relationships between parents, children, school and the community. Graduates of this degree program can pursue professional careers within child care facilities, schools and federal programs.

The college also offers an Early Childhood Education Certificate. Comprised of 32-35 credit hours, this program is designed for students interested in working in day care programming as well as government and service agencies. In addition to small group analyses, students are required to complete fieldwork courses in individual and group counseling as well as courses toward child care training certification.

College of Southern Maryland

La Plata-based College of Southern Maryland offers an Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Development. Combining theory with practical experience, this degree program prepares students for careers as preschool teachers, child care center directors and family child care providers. Once students have completed the program's courses in early childhood education as well as child growth and development, they will meet the requirements to become senior employees within childcare facilities, as indicated by the Maryland State Department of Education, Office of Childcare. Additional coursework within the program includes children's literature and the language arts, communication and the preschool child, activities for early childhood and a cooperative work experience.

Students may also opt to pursue an Early Childhood Development Certificate. This 27-credit hour program is designed for students interested in becoming preschool teachers as well as current child care employees desiring to further their skills. Along with a cooperative work experience, students must complete courses in child growth and development, early childhood education and activities for early childhood.

The college also offers a Child Care Provider Letter of Recognition. Comprised of nine credit hours, this degree program features coursework that meets the requirements for becoming a preschool teacher in Maryland. Courses in early childhood education, child growth and development, child health and safety as well as childhood nutrition are required.

Harford Community College

Harford Community College is located in Bel Air and offers an Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education. As part of the 60-credit hour program, students must complete two field placement experiences, each comprised of 135 hours. One of these placements features a specialization in teaching while the other focuses on assisting in the management of a child care center. Additional coursework includes materials and curriculum in early childhood, avenues to children's literacy, classroom management, nutrition as well as child health and safety issues.

Howard Community College

Columbia-based Howard Community College offers an Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Development. This degree program combines lecture courses with hands-on experience while having students work in child care centers off-campus. In addition to beginner and advanced practicum courses, students are required to complete courses in child growth and development, methods and materials in early childhood education, child care center administration and management and child safety and nutrition. Under state law, graduates of this program will meet the requirements to become a child care center director for facilities licensed for 40 or more children. These graduates must also be at least 21 years old and have at least two years of experience in child care programming in order to meet the state standard for a director role.

The college also offers an Early Childhood Development Certificate. Students completing this 30-credit hour program will meet state requirements for becoming a child care center director for facilities licensed to teach up to 20 youths. As part of the state requirements, these individuals must also be at least 21 years old and possess at least one year of experience in child care programming. Graduates from this program will also meet the requirements for becoming an aide in a child care center and, provided they are at least 19 years old, a child care teacher. Required coursework within the program includes working with infants and toddlers, school-age child care, child health, childhood nutrition and successful classroom management.

Students may also pursue an Early Childhood Development Letter of Recognition. This program is comprised of two courses: child growth and development as well as methods and materials in early childhood education. Along with meeting state requirements for becoming an aide in a child care center, this program also provides the education needed to become a child care teacher, as long as the student is at least 19 years old and has at least one year of experience in child care programming or has completed one year of college.

Montgomery College

Located in Rockville, Montgomery College offers an Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education Technology. Emphasizing the importance of a challenging curriculum and a positive environment, this degree program is comprised of courses that develop students' skills in fostering the education and development of children. In addition to a practicum course in early childhood education, this program also features courses in child growth and development, curricula planning in early childhood education, child health, nutrition and social emotional development in young children.

The college also offers an Early Childhood Education Certificate. This 30-credit hour program features coursework in observation and assessment of young children, children's literature, child health, safety issues, nutrition and a practicum in early childhood education. Students graduating with this degree can pursue careers in numerous child care settings, working with infants and toddlers as well as school-age children.

Prince George's Community College

Located in Largo, Prince George's Community College offers an Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education. This degree program is designed for students interested in careers in teaching and directing within early childhood centers. Along with advancing students' communication and planning skills, the program's curriculum emphasizes the application of learning and development theories and strategies within child care settings. Required coursework includes methods and materials in early childhood education, child growth and development, guiding behavior in educational settings as well as child care center administration and management. Students must also complete a fieldwork course in early childhood education or early childhood special education.

The college also offers a Mastery in Early Childhood Education Certificate. Comprised of 27 hours, this program prepares students for careers as senior staff, teachers or directors in child care centers. Students are required to complete courses in multicultural education, child growth and development, infant and toddler curriculum and teaching as well as principles and practices in early childhood education.

Students may also select to pursue an Early Childhood Education Letter of Recognition. This nine-credit hour program is comprised of courses in principles and practices in early childhood education, methods and materials in early childhood education as well as child growth and development.

Salisbury University

This school is located in Salisbury and offers a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education. Along with 30 observation hours within a field experience, this degree program also requires courses in developing the young child, instructional techniques of inclusion and a course in language, literacy and play. As part of the program requirements, students must also choose a minor and complete an internship requirement. Following completion of this program, students are eligible to apply for certification from the Maryland State Department of Education for early childhood education.

The Community College of Baltimore County

Located in Baltimore, this community college offers an Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Development. Comprised of 62 credit hours, this degree program features coursework in foundations of education, growth and development in early childhood, curriculum and materials in early childhood education, children's literature and nutrition as well as health and safety in early childhood education. Students must also complete a field-based experience, which requires six hours of work each week within a child care or education setting. Possible career opportunities for graduates of this program include program directors and teachers within child care centers and preschools.

Towson University

This university is located in Towson and offers Bachelor of Arts or Science in Early Childhood Education. This degree program is comprised of coursework that fulfills Maryland's requirements for certification in teaching children from infancy to the third grade. As part of their degree requirements, students must complete a series of internship experiences. These experiences provide students with the opportunity to work in a variety of child care settings including day care centers, preschools and hospitals. Additional coursework includes early childhood development and intervention, interactive technology and the young child, infancy and toddler development and intervention as well as best practices in early literacy.

The university also offers an advanced learning opportunity for students with a Certificate of Advanced Study in Early Childhood Education. Within this degree program, students may choose a specialization in one of the following areas: early childhood advocate or policy specialist, teacher educator or researcher, family researcher, accomplished teacher or administrator with a public school emphasis. Along with an internship experience, this degree program requires coursework in critical perspectives in early childhood, program development and evaluation as well as leadership and advocacy in early childhood education.
