Where to Find a Cooking Class in Cincinnati

Students interested in taking cooking classes or enrolling in cooking programs can choose from programs offered at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College (CSTCC), located just 4.6 miles from the downtown area. While this may be the only public school offering cooking programs in the Cincinnati area, the college has various program options from which students can choose.

For example, the Hospitalities Technologies Department, which includes the Midwest Culinary Institute (MCI), offers certificate programs in culinary arts and dietary management. Additionally, the department has degree programs in nutrition science, dietetic technology, culinary arts, pastry arts and hospitality management.

Cincinnati State Technical and Community College (CSTCC)

CSTCC offers more than 100 certificate and degree programs, including some online degrees. Also of interest to students is CSTCC's Midwest Culinary Institute, a school that's well-known for its programs, faculty, equipment and facilities. Culinary students can choose from several certificate or degree programs that prepare them for entry-level employment or transfer to baccalaureate programs. Students pursuing degrees must complete a First Year Experience course during the first 12 credit hours of the program.

Culinary Arts Certificate

This 12-credit program is aimed at individuals who are serious about improving their culinary skills but not necessarily interested in becoming professional chefs. The two culinary courses start with basics such as kitchen equipment, food service sanitation and knife skills and advance to topics like creating sauces and soups. By the end of the second culinary course, students are familiar with cooking fish, meat and poultry. Students interested in this program must take basic algebra or have adequate scores on placement tests.

Associate of Applied Business in Culinary Arts

The 6-semester program prepares students to work in the food industry by offering a mixture of both culinary arts and business courses. With a focus on both food preparation and culinary management, the culinary arts program teaches students about cooking methods, butchery, soups and sauces, garde manger and pastries. Students also complete courses in business law, financial accounting, microeconomics, marketing and customer relations. With instructor approval, candidates can complete a part-time co-op work experience in the third semester and a full-time one in the fifth semester. The capstone course tests students' knowledge of culinary skills, costing, nutrition and management.

Associate of Applied Science in Dietetic Technology

The dietetic technology program is aimed at individuals who are interested in nutrition and food preparation and in providing services to those in need of dietary assistance. The 5-semester program includes general education classes, along with core courses in community nutrition, medical nutrition, nutrition assessment, cooking for a healthy lifestyle, quantity food production and food service management. To complete the sequential dietetic directed practice courses, the student participates in supervised practice in a healthcare setting. The program also requires each student to complete an unpaid internship in a healthcare setting and a food service management setting as capstone courses.

Associate of Applied Business in Pastry Arts

The Associate of Applied Business in Pastry Arts program takes 65 credits and six semesters to complete. Students complete a curriculum of pastry-related courses, business courses and general education courses. Students begin the program by learning baking and kitchen basics and advance to the creation of fancy confections and decorated wedding cakes.

Course topics include the theory and fundamentals of baking, pastry and buffet design, nutritional baking and cuisine and celebration cakes. Courses in business law, food and beverage cost control, financial accounting and economics are also part of the program. The third and fifth semesters include a full-time cooperative education experience. For the capstone course in the sixth semester, students demonstrate their knowledge of pastry and baking by creating a restaurant dessert.
