Undergraduate certificate programs range from 16-27 credit hours, while associate degree programs take approximately 60 credits to complete.


Bristol Community College

Bristol Community College in Fall River offers a 2-year office administration associate's degree program with a concentration in a medical administrative assistant. Coursework covers medical office procedures, medical terminology, text editing, medical transcription, and medical insurance form preparation. Prior to graduation, students complete a portfolio development course or participate in cooperative work experience.

Bunker Hill Community College

Boston-based Bunker Hill Community College provides a 27-credit hour medical information management assistant certificate program and a 61-credit hour office information management associate's degree program with an emphasis in medical information management. Students in the certificate program may enroll in courses covering medical terminology, records and information management, Microsoft Office applications, business correspondence, and medical billing.

Along with general education courses and most of the courses found in the certificate program, associate's degree program students encounter training in administrative business communication, administrative technology, information security procedures, business correspondence, and database design. An internship is required before graduation.

Cape Cod Community College

Medical office administration certificate and associate's degree programs are offered at Cape Cod Community College in West Barnstable. Both programs feature coursework in medical terminology, medical office procedures, word processing, office communication systems, medical coding and billing, office accounting and database applications. Along with general education courses, associate's degree program students also complete cooperative work experience or a standard office procedures course. The certificate program can be finished in 27-credit hours, and the associate's degree program needs 61-62 credit hours.

Massachusetts Bay Community College

Massachusetts Bay Community College can be found in Wellesley Hills and has a medical office administrative assistant certificate program. Topics include medical terminology, medical office insurance, and billing, medical office procedures and college writing. A total of 23-24 credit hours are needed for certificate completion.

Middlesex Community College

Middlesex Community College's Lowell Campus provides a medical office administration certificate program. Students are educated in health insurance and coding, anatomy and physiology, medical receptionist skills, medical transcription, medical terminology, appointment scheduling, and inventory management. Mount Wachusett Community College

Northern Essex Community College

Students who finish the medical office assistant certificate program at Haverhill's Northern Essex Community College qualify to take the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) certification exam through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Training covers healthcare law and ethics, medical office administration and medical terminology. At least 19 credit hours are needed to graduate.

Quinsigamond Community College

Found in Worchester, Quinsigamond Community College offers a medical office certificate program that lasts 2 semesters. Courses include medical law, ethics, machine transcription, billing, office administration, and coding. Required cooperative work experience allows students to apply theoretical concepts in a professional work environment.

Springfield Technical Community College

Medical office administrative assistant certificate and associate's degree programs are found at Springfield Technical Community College in Springfield. The 26-credit hour certificate program covers health office procedures, medical terminology, computer basics, medical computer applications, electronic health records, keyboarding and editing techniques. In addition to the certificate program and general education courses, the 60-credit hour associate's degree program has courses in document formatting, Microsoft Access, and office accounting. Graduates of either program can sit for the NHA's CMAA certification exam.
