South Florida has many schools that offer CNA training programs; some institutions refer to these professionals as patient care technicians/assistants. Almost all of the available programs are training programs, though at least one leads to the award of a technical certificate. Some programs allow graduates to more easily transfer to formal education programs in related fields. Almost all provide clinical training in addition to classroom instruction.
Atlantic Technical College
Under its health sciences branch, Atlantic offers a nursing assistant program solely available at the Arthur Ashe campus in Fort Lauderdale. The entire program takes 120 hours to complete, equally split into theoretical instruction and clinical practice. Once students finish the program requirements, they may sit for the CNA exam and apply for the State of Florida Ready to Work credential. At the completion, students may be able to transfer to Broward Technical Centers to pursue a practical nursing program.
Florida Keys Community College
Florida Keys Community College is a 2-year school in Key West. A CNA training program is available based on student necessity. In total, the training program has 165 hours of required class time. It is broken up between 90 hours of a health-related core curriculum and segmented clinic and theory time.
Fort Myers Technical College
Located in Fort Myers, this school offers programs in more than 30 categories, including a CNA program. The entire length of the curriculum is 120 hours. This training program prepares students to take the required certification exam.
Indian River State College
More than 17,000 students attend Indian River State College each year in Fort Pierce. Under the Health Sciences division, a CNA training program is available. It readies students to work with registered nurses and work in hospitals and nursing homes. When enrolled, students will spend 20 hours in class each week.
Lindsey Hopkins Technical Education Center
Lindsey Hopkins Technical Education Center is located in metropolitan Miami. The 2-year higher-learning institution has a 19:1 student to faculty ratio. A patient care assistant training program is offered under the health science career cluster. The curriculum combines laboratory theory and clinic practice time. Safety drills, equipment, and communication techniques are explored. The entire length of the program spans 290 hours. Students may seek state and national certification after passing the certification exams.
Palm Beach State College
Palm Beach State College in Lake Worth serves more than 29,000 students. A nursing assistant and patient care assistant program are offered at the state college. The latter program is designed to expand offerings found in the traditional nursing assistant training curriculum. This program teaches students how to care for acutely ill and pediatric patients. Forty of each training program's 290 hours are spent in a hospital clinic setting. Completion of either program warrants admission to the National Nurse's Aide Assessment Exam.
Pinellas Technical Education Center - St. Petersburg
Pinellas Technical Education Center in St. Petersburg is a 2-year school with a 26:1 student to faculty ratio. The school offers a 3-month patient care assistant program. The certification program has designated courses that instruct students in health care safety, home management, and elderly patient care. It is accredited by the Florida State Board of Nursing and awards a CNA designation after the student takes the certification exam.
Robert Morgan Educational Center
Robert Morgan Educational Center is a 2-year school in Miami. The practical nursing program prepares students to work in a variety of areas in the health care field. These include working in nursing, phlebotomy, in-home care and more. The certification program has 600 hours of instruction, segmented into seven parts. Each of these areas awards a certificate of completion once finished. Students also may sit for the state exam to become a registered CNA.
Sheridan Technical Center
Sheridan Technical Center is situated on an 18-acre campus in Hollywood. A 290-hour patient care technical program is offered at the school. The curriculum was designed to prepare students to seek entry-level health care positions. Those who finish the training program can take the State Nursing Assistant Certification Exam.
South Florida State College
South Florida State College has campuses in Arcadia, Avon Park, Bowling Green, Lake Placid, Lordia and Sebring. The school offers an occupational nursing assistant program. The length of the program is 165 hours and is split into laboratory and classroom instruction. Once the program requirements are finished, the student may take the state's certification exam.
The Florida Broad of Nursing has developed specific requirements to become a CNA. The student must complete a curriculum program organized by the Enterprise Florida Jobs and Education Partnership Grant and pass the related competency exam.
