University of Virginia
The University of Virginia is located in Charlottesville and enrolls about 24,000 students each year. Its School of Nursing offers a pediatric nurse practitioner master's degree program that's available on a full- or part-time basis. The full-time program takes approximately 21 months to complete. Coursework covers topics like health policy, advanced pharmacology and nursing theory. The program also includes two preceptorships, one of which must be completed at a site providing care to underserved rural areas.
The university also offers a pediatric nurse practitioner certificate program designed for licensed registered nurses who already possess a master's degree in the field. Classes in this program cover pharmacology, advanced health assessments and pathophysiology. The curriculum also includes two preceptorships.
To qualify for employment as pediatric nurses, applicants must be licensed registered nurses (RNs) who've completed a graduate program accredited by a professional organization like the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Prospective nurse practitioners also need to earn certification from an agency such as the American Nurses Credentialing Center or the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board. This process usually requires candidates to pass an exam after completing an accredited graduate degree or post-master's certificate program.
Only one university in Virginia offers a pediatric nursing program which is approved by the CCNE. Applicants to this particular program need a bachelor's degree in nursing and a current RN license to be admitted.
