Essential Information

Florida students can major or minor in communication through associate's, bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degrees in a variety of programs, like journalism, media, or mass communication. Both undergraduate and graduate certificates are also available. Programs may offer additional concentrations within the subject. Some programs are offered online.

Many programs in communications require students to complete a thesis, project or internship. Students can also find schools that offer related student organizations and graduate assistantships and fellowships. Profiled below are 10 of the largest public and private, not-for-profit institutions in Florida offering communication degrees.


Florida Atlantic University

Located in Boca Raton, Florida Atlantic University offers degree programs that lead to a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies and Master of Arts in Communication Studies through the School of Communication and Multimedia Studies. Students in the bachelor's degree program complete 36 credits in their major, including courses in communication theory, interpersonal communication, and political communication. This program of study culminates in a capstone course that focuses on community building or democratic civic engagement.

The Master of Arts (MA) in Communication Studies program is an interdisciplinary program that helps students develop a theoretical understanding of communication at the intersection of culture, media, and rhetoric. This program is suitable for those who wish to pursue further academic study or professional careers. The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Media, Technology, and Entertainment program combines artistic and technical aspects of digital media to produce interface designs, games, or 3-D films.

Florida International University

Offering a wide range of communication degree programs through its School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Florida International University is in suburban Miami. At the undergraduate level, students can pursue a Bachelor of Science in Communication with three areas of concentration: digital media studies, broadcast media and journalism. Graduates from these programs might work in diverse communication professions, such as publicist, lobbyist, or photojournalist.

The school also offers a master's degree program in mass communication with options in global strategic communications and Spanish-language journalism. The global strategic communications option is a fully online program that can be completed in 12 months. The Spanish-language journalism program focuses on multimedia journalism and offers a range of internship options.

Florida State University

Florida State University is a prominent research university located in Tallahassee that offers communication degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels through its College of Communication and Information. Undergraduate students can complete a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts in Communication with concentrations in media/communication studies, advertising, public relations, and digital media production.

Graduate students can earn a Master of Arts or Master of Science in Communication, pursuing tracks in integrated marketing communication or media and communication studies. At the Panama City campus, students can pursue a master's degree program in corporate and public communication. The doctoral program places an emphasis on communication theory and research. Graduate certificate programs offered by the School of Communication include multicultural marketing communication and digital video production.

Indian River State College

Indian River State College in Fort Pierce offers an Associate of Arts in Journalism. Students in this program may take courses like news reporting and writing, microeconomics, and public speaking in addition to their general education courses. This program is transferable to a school within the Florida University System.

Nova Southeastern University

Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale offers a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies program through the school's Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences. Students working toward this degree choose from concentrations in digital media production, journalism, or strategic communication. Students in all tracks learn about research methods, communication theory, persuasion, and public speaking.

University of Central Florida

The University of Central Florida (UCF) is located in Orlando and provides undergraduate and graduate degree programs in communication. Communication students can choose from four bachelor's degree programs in human communication, advertising/PR, journalism, and radio/television. Among the student groups undergraduate communication majors can join are on-campus student chapters of the Society for Professional Journalists, the Florida Public Relations Association, and the American Advertising Federation.

Graduate students can earn a Master of Arts in Communication. Master's degree students can choose from concentrations in mass communication or interpersonal communication. Students may qualify for assistantships and fellowships. Both tracks have thesis and non-thesis options.

University of Florida

Gainesville's University of Florida offers a number of relevant degree programs through the College of Journalism and Communications. At the undergraduate level, students can choose from four bachelor's degree programs in advertising, journalism, public relations, and telecommunication. A minor in mass communication studies is also available. Communication students have opportunities to study abroad; for example, a journalism professor takes students to Berlin every year.

The Master of Arts in Mass Communication (MAMC) degree program has several areas of study. These include journalism, public relations, multimedia journalism, and health communication. Online MAMC programs are available in global strategic communication, web design and online communication, and social media. Applicants to the PhD program in mass communication need to have earned a master's degree with a minimum of a B average in core journalism/mass communication courses. Courses in the graduate programs may include mass communication theory, legal aspects of mass communication, new media, research methods, and literary journalism.

University of Miami

The University of Miami is located in Coral Gables. The private university offers a number of communication degree programs through its School of Communication. Undergraduates can pursue a Bachelor of Science in Communication with eight areas of concentration, including advertising, journalism, and media management. Examples of courses from these areas of study include advertising copywriting, media planning, small group communication, and broadcast journalism. Bachelor's degree students complete 39-45 credits in their School of Communication major. Additionally, ten minors are offered; interactive media, general communication, public relations, advertising, journalism, media management, broadcast journalism, electronic media, communication and motion pictures.

The School of Communication also offers these graduate programs: an MA with five areas of focus in communication and a PhD in Communication. MA areas of focus include communication studies, public relations, and interactive media. These programs generally take two years to complete on a full-time basis. Doctoral candidates can choose from a wide variety of areas of research focus, which include environmental, health, and intercultural communication.

University of North Florida

The University of North Florida is in Jacksonville. The communication department in the College of Arts and Sciences offers a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Communication program with concentrations in advertising, multimedia journalism and production, and public relations. Communication minors are available in communication studies and mass communication. An internship is part of the curriculum for the major. Internship opportunities fostered by this school include Jacksonville Magazine, WJXT, and the Florida Times - Union.

University of South Florida - Main Campus

The main campus of the University of South Florida is located in Tampa. The Department of Communication in the College of Arts and Sciences at this large school offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs. There are six interwoven areas of concentration in the bachelor's degree program in communication, including health communication, public advocacy, and relational communication. Students can also pursue a minor in communication. Honors communication students may be able to take more advanced coursework.

The 36-hour MA program in communication has thesis and non-thesis options. Doctoral students work with faculty to develop an individualized plan of study that culminates in a dissertation, which may explore a wide variety of interdisciplinary fields in communication studies. Graduate coursework may cover topics like communication theory, history, ethnography, and digital communication.
