Houston Community College is one of the largest colleges in the United States. The CAD programs include several specializations which can help students focus on their specific interest area.
Certificates in Computer-Aided Design
Students in HCC's computer-aided design certificate programs can specialize in architectural drafting, general drafting, electromechanical design, mechanical design and process piping design. These programs include basic, intermediate and advanced classes in computer-aided drafting. Students take additional coursework specific to their chosen specializations, and cooperative education opportunities are available.
Associate of Applied Science in Drafting and Design Engineering Technology
Students pursuing a drafting and design engineering technology degree can specialize in the same fields as students in HCC's certificate programs. In addition to basic, intermediate and advanced drafting coursework, students take general education classes. Participation in a cooperative education experience or completion of a final project is required.
Texas Southern University
Texas Southern University is a historically black university located in downtown Houston. The College of Science and Technology at this school offers bachelor's degree programs related to computer-aided design.
Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering Technology
The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Computer Engineering Technology curriculum focuses on the hardware related to computers, such as circuits and microcomputers. Students can take an introductory computer-aided design course, in addition to classes in DC circuits, digital hardware design, digital logic circuits, analytic geometry, data communications and microcomputer networks.
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Technology
The B.S. in Electrical Engineering Technology program focuses on computer-aided design issues with engineering systems. Students learn about introductory computer-aided design, communication systems, computer control systems, microprocessor interfacing and electronics.
Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology with a Design Technology Concentration
The design technology specialization is one of two concentrations in this program. The concentration curriculum covers computer-aided design applications for the manufacturing and industrial sectors. Some computer-aided design classes include fundamentals of drafting, descriptive geometry, mechanical drafting, architectural drafting and computer-aided design. Other classes in the curriculum cover related areas of quality control, business mathematics, trigonometry and construction materials.
San Jacinto Community College
San Jacinto Community College is the local community college in East Harris County near Houston. Computer-aided design classes are offered in the engineering design graphics department.
Certificate in Engineering Design Graphics
The certificate in engineering design graphics is a 31-credit program. Students can enroll in a variety of concentrations, including mechanical and petro/industrial options. There is also a 16-credit occupational certificate. Classes that are found across these specializations include technical drafting, basic computer-aided design, descriptive geometry, machine drafting and pipe drafting. Each concentration includes an internship or a final project requirement.
Associate of Applied Science in Engineering Design Graphics
The A.A.S. in Engineering Design Graphics has several specializations, similar to the certificate program. Students can choose from concentration areas that include architectural, civil and structural design, mechanics and technical animation. Some available class topics include architectural design, structural drafting, specialized computer-aided design, electrical drafting, drafting for specialized occupations, topographic design and solid modeling.
