Geared toward those interested in technology's applications in the business environment, computer information systems education programs are widely available at the undergraduate and graduate levels through certificate and degree programs. Certificate programs are typically designed for students seeking entry-level jobs, such as desktop support or network support technicians.
Degree programs, however, often feature concentrations that prepare students to find employment or advance in a specific field, such as software development, systems analysis, computer security, database administration or website design. Such programs usually provide a well-rounded business and technology education, and they may sometimes be completed entirely online. The two WA schools discussed below offer certificate and associate's degree programs in the field.
Located in Bellevue, Washington, this 4-year school is the largest public school in the state to offer career programs in computer information systems. Students can choose from two certificates and one associate's degree in the subject field.
Certificate programs are available in desktop support and network support. The desktop support program requires 45 course hours in areas that include network management, security, user assistance and documentation. The network support certificate program features 45 course hours in network design, configuration and management based on Microsoft systems.
The school's 91-credit associate's program in information systems is designed for those who are entering the field of computer programming or analysis. Students receive instruction in all facets of computer information systems, as well as take courses in a chosen area of concentration, such as software development, business intelligence or database administration.
Clover Park Technical College
Located in Lakewood, Washington, this 2-year public school also awards degrees to those pursuing careers in computer information services. Students can work towards an Associate of Applied Technology degree or a certificate in computer networking information system security.
This certificate program requires 89 credit hours of coursework. Courses include network and server fundamentals, advanced Linux, and many other technical subjects.
The associate's program is geared toward those seeking careers as programmers specializing in network security. Students must complete required core courses, general education requirements and course requirements in one of two specialties: Cisco network design and security or computer and communications security.
