Computer Tech Certification and Certificate Program Overview

Courses in computer technician certification involve hands-on training in a variety of hardware types, operating systems, and applications. Employment Outlook and Salary Information

Computer support specialists, including computer technicians, held around 632,490 jobs in 2015, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS, www.bls.gov). Employment opportunities were expected to grow 12% between 2014 and 2024, largely spurred by the increase in complexity of computer technology. As of May 2015, the median annual wage for computer support specialists was $51,470.

Continuing Education and Certification Information

Requirements for employment as a computer technician vary, but some employers prefer applicants with an associate or bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering or a related field. Other employers primarily value technical skill and experience obtained through limited formal training, such as a certificate program, and hands-on experience. Computer technicians can pursue certification in a variety of forms, with A+ certification among the most popular. A+ certification, which is offered by the Computer Technology Industry Association (CompTIA), is a vendor neutral certification proving an individual has the general competency and skills required to be a computer technician. A+ certification requires passing a Core Hardware exam and an Operating System Technologies exam.

Computer technician education can be easily found at the certificate level, teaching students basic retail and computer skills to earn employment within a variety of career fields. In addition, these programs provide an educational foundation for undergraduate degrees and professional certification.
