Online Course in Web Design

Computer web design courses teach students programming skills for producing and developing websites. Because web design courses are heavily computer-based, they are especially amenable to distance learning. The following online offerings represent a typical curriculum in computer web design program.

Web Markup Languages is foundational course teaches students about XHTML and CSS programming languages. Students learn to change background patterns and colors, control website layouts, create hyperlinks, and insert tables and graphics.

Advanced Web Development is an intermediate course that teaches students to use Dreamweaver and other related software for website design and production. Students also learn how to integrate a Dreamweaver database with other database software, such as MySQL.

Web Graphics covers basic graphics concepts, such as resolution and compression, website layout, color, and optimization. It also teaches students how to produce web graphics with Fireworks and Photoshop software and use Dreamweaver to upload their work. Students learn how to create simple animations and web design elements like rollover buttons, as well as how to produce functional and aesthetically pleasing websites.

Desktop Publishing is a course where students are familiarized with desktop publishing software, such as Adobe InDesign, which can be used to create digital content for websites, desktop devices, or mobile apps. Students build both their technological and artistic skills to use this software effectively.

Digital Imaging is a course that familiarizes students with the editing software used to alter images used for websites. Students gain experience with techniques such as layering and montaging, and they learn how to optimize content for web distribution, without violating copyright laws.

Program Information

In computer web design courses, students learn to use programming languages and software programs. Throughout a course, students typically complete a series of assignments, which might be followed by a final project. In order to take some courses, students might need to have the requisite software installed on their computers. These courses may be part of bachelor's or master's degree programs in computer science, information technology, graphic design, or a closely related field.

To recap, online courses related to computer web design cover both the technological and aesthetic aspects of creating online content. Relevant courses may be part of broader degree programs.
