In Connecticut, continuing education is offered by a number of institutions, including both community colleges and universities. Students can earn degrees, work toward certification or take single non-credit courses to learn a new skill. In addition, non-degree personal improvement courses, such as arts and crafts are offered. Manchester Community College's Continuing Education Programs

Manchester Community College offers certificate programs, associate's degrees and opportunities for continuing study. The Continuing Education Division offers non-credit courses for adults, as well as certification programs to enhance business and trade skills.

Medical Office Assistant Program

Students in this 12-week program get training to prepare for entry-level positions. They learn about general medical office skills, keyboarding and word processing, medical terminology and electronics medical records software.

Computer Courses

Beginning students can take basic courses in areas like keyboarding, word processing and social media. Experienced or professional students can take advanced courses, some of which prepare students for professional certification; these include the Network+ Certification and the AutoCAD.

Culinary Arts Courses

Culinary arts courses through the Continuing Education Division are designed for the recreational chef. Students can learn about regional cuisines, including Italian or Japanese cooking. Or, they can learn new skills, such as food and wine pairing and the use of herbs in cooking.

Arts and Crafts Courses

A number of courses are offered in the area of arts and crafts. These courses are typically designed for leisure and recreation, and help students enhance their artistic skills. Courses are offered in areas such as drawing, painting and pottery.

University of Connecticut's Continuing Education Programs

The University of Connecticut's (UConn) continuing education programs focus on providing educational opportunities for adult learning. Degree completion programs and graduate programs are offered in addition to professional development courses.

Intensive English Program

Students can take courses to enhance their basic English speaking, reading and writing skills by selecting the general English for communications skills or the English for academic purposes track. A TOEFL prep course is also included in the program.

Bachelor of General Studies

The Bachelor of General Studies is a degree completion program for adult students who have completed some previous undergraduate coursework. Students receive a broad educational foundation and can choose courses from various academic disciplines.

Master of Professional Studies

The Master of Professional Studies is an online degree option. The program provides study in human resources management for professionals seeking enhanced skills within their industry.

Central Connecticut State University's Continuing Education Programs

Central Connecticut State University offers programs for adult learners through its Office of Continuing Education. Various courses, training programs and certificate programs are available for professional development and customized training.

Human Resources

Students can choose from three certificate programs in the field. The Compensation certificate focuses on pay structures and measuring the effectiveness of a compensation program, while the Employment and the Law certificate focuses on the various laws in the field, such as labor and discrimination laws. The Integrated HR certificate looks at solving real HR problems and serves as a capstone course.

Multicultural/Multilingual Medical Interpretation

This is a hybrid course that includes a practicum. Designed for those who already speak a second language, the course trains students to become a Certified Medical Interpreter. Students study medical terminology, ethics, cross-cultural issues and more. Courses are offered once a week in the evening. Once they have earned their course completion certificate, students can take the national Medical Interpreters certification exam, which they'll need to pass in order to work professionally.

GIS Hybrid Certificate

This certificate program in geographic information systems (GIS) has online coursework with on-ground weekend meeting dates that students can choose to attend. Composed of three courses - GIS Essentials, Practical Applications and Advanced Applications - this program trains students in spatial relationships and analysis. Students must complete a project by the end of the program, and those who take all three courses will be prepared for certification in the field.

Connecticut has several different schools with continuing education classes, certificate and degree programs in fields such as computers, arts and crafts, and languages. Some of these programs are offered in the evenings, online or in hybrid formats for students needing more flexible schedules.
