Continuing Education Courses in NJ with School Information

Several of New Jersey's schools offer continuing education programs. These schools host a variety of non-credit and certificate programs designed primarily for professional training, though personal enrichment courses can also be found. Three schools providing continuing education programs are profiled in this article.

Many New Jersey institutions offer continuing education programs at the certificate and bachelor's degree levels to prepare adult learners for career advancement. Here, courses of study, delivery methods and requirements at three area schools will be discussed.

Schools and Programs

New Jersey residents in need of skills enhancement, further professional development, or a career change can find a large variety of continuing education courses at colleges and universities throughout the state. Management, healthcare and legal studies are among the most common topics explored in these programs. Adult learners could also learn a foreign language or how to run a business. Many of these programs provide online training and internship or hands-on experiences. Some even prepare students to take specific certification exams in their field of interest. Rutgers University's Continuing Education Programs

The Division on Continuing Studies at Rutgers University offers a number of non-credit certificate programs as well as opportunities for off-campus degree programs. Online programs are also offered. The Center for Continuing Professional Development provides several programs in areas related to management and business, including those listed here.

Carpentry Program

This program prepares students for the construction trade. The program teaches planning, budgeting, managing resources and managing personnel.

Paralegal Certificate Program

Students learn skills in interviewing, investigating, researching and document preparation. The programs help prepare for the National Association of Legal Assistants Certified Paralegal or Certified Legal Assistant exam.

Project Management Programs

This series of courses and programs teaches technical skills as well as strategic thinking and people skills. Students learn to manage project teams, maintain schedules and budgets and effectively manage projects.

Business/Management Programs

Students have the opportunity to choose from a plethora of business and management programs at this school's Continuing Education department. Options include the advanced management skills associate certificate; budget, accounting and financial management professional certificate; business ethics, law and code of conduct professional certificate; family business management professional certificate; and a leadership, organizational leadership certificate, among myriad other certificates and programs in business and marketing.

Online certificate programs at the Center for Continuing Professional Development are available in bookkeeping and e-business, as well as administrative and business skills, international business, and sales and marketing.

Language Courses

In the Education/Youth Development section of the Continuing Education's certificate programs, students have the choice of becoming certified in foreign language education and English as a Second Language programs. There are also separate programs for American language studies and Spanish language courses.

Thomas Edison State College's Continuing Education Programs

The John S. Watson School of Public Service and Continuing Studies at Thomas Edison offers several non-credit professional certificates in the areas of health and wellness and paralegal studies. Programs are designed for professionals seeking growth in their current field or for those who wish to embark on a new career path. Most programs are offered online.

Fitness Business Management Certificate Program

This online program teaches students to manage personal training programs at commercial or healthcare-related fitness facilities. Management, marketing, basic finance, human resources and customer services are also covered. The program includes an optional field internship.

Personal Fitness Training Certificate Program

Students study anatomy, kinesiology, exercise physiology, fitness assessment, business management skills and program development. Those who complete the program are eligible for industry-related certification exams. This certificate can be completed in as little as five months.

Nursing Courses

Nursing courses are offered in a variety of formats. Required courses in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs include nursing infomatics, research in nursing, advanced health assessment, and health policy. Accelerated courses are also offered, depending on the term, for obtaining the BSN. Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) programs are also offered. Specialties of the MSN program include nurse educator, nursing administration, and nursing infomatics. Practicum courses are also available.

College of Saint Elizabeth's Continuing Education Programs

The College of Saint Elizabeth has a continuing studies department with programs for adults who want to advance their careers. It offers bachelor's level continuing education programs, and certificate, dual and combined degree programs are also available. Certificate programs in ministry and spirituality are available in English and Spanish.

Foods and Nutrition B.S. Program

This program is designed to prepare students for employment in nutrition and dietetics, or advanced study in the field. Two concentrations are available. Courses cover topics like medical nutrition, biochemistry and food production.

Psychology B.A. Program

This program requires 40 credits and a capstone project. Courses include statistical research, cognitive processes and human development.

Religious Studies and Philosophy B.A. Program

This program requires 36 credits and a capstone project. Course subjects include the Bible, sexuality ethics and moral theology.

Rutgers University, Thomas Edison State College and the College of Saint Elizabeth all offer continuing education programs in New Jersey. Some programs culminate in a certificate or bachelor's degree.
