Cooking classes in Pennsylvania are offered within culinary arts and baking and pastry arts programs. In addition to cooking, these programs teach students about menu planning, nutrition, cost control and sanitation. Students can often find certificate and associate degrees programs within 2-year community colleges; however, culinary arts education and training at the bachelor's degree level is offered at some 4-year colleges and universities.
Bucks County Community College
Bucks County Community College is located in Newtown and offers cooking courses through certificate and associate degree programs. The 27-credit culinary/pastry and catering arts certificate program teaches students about food preparation, baking and decorating, buffet planning and food purchasing.
A chef apprenticeship associate degree program is offered and includes concentrations in foods and pastry. Both concentrations require that students complete 6,000 hours of supervised training and courses in nutrition, food preparation, baking and decorating, buffet planning, menu planning and food purchasing.
Community College of Allegheny County
Based in Pittsburgh, students at the Community College of Allegheny County can earn a culinary arts associate degree. Students who enroll in the program are required to complete 67 credits. Courses cover topics in culinary arts theory, baking, food and beverage service, nutrition, menu design, food preparation and food purchasing.
Community College of Philadelphia
At the Philadelphia-based Community College of Philadelphia, students can pursue a culinary arts associate degree. The 4-semester program requires 66 credits. Students have an opportunity to learn about food production, nutrition, dining room management, American cuisine, beverage management, baking and hospitality law. A 400-hour work experience is also required.
Drexel University is located in Philadelphia and offers a bachelor's degree program in culinary arts. The program is 184 credits and educates students at its 14,000-square-foot cooking lab and student-run Academic Bistro. Culinary courses include baking, Italian and French cuisine, butchery, gastronomy, dining room management and American cuisine. The program offers students a co-op experience at culinary establishments in New York City, Napa Valley, Beverly Hills and Philadelphia. Students may also complete a 4-credit minor in culinary arts with electives such as food styling, Chinese cuisine and commercial food production.
Harrisburg Area Community College - Harrisburg
Harrisburg Area Community College - Harrisburg features several programs that have cooking courses. The baking and pastry arts certificate program is 31 credits and includes coursework and an internship. Students enrolled in the culinary arts - catering diploma program are required to complete 27 credits and take courses in culinary arts, bartending, wine, catering and sanitation.
The 47-credit culinary arts certificate program address topics like restaurant operations, menu design, nutrition, dining room management and food purchasing. The culinary arts associate degree program is 75 credits and consists of general education requirements, culinary coursework and a practicum.
Indiana University of Pennsylvania
Located in Indiana, Pennsylvania, this university has four programs that include cooking courses. The culinary arts certificate program can be completed in 16 months. Students are educated and trained at a 13,000-square-foot academy that includes kitchens and labs. The school offers students the opportunity to transfer their credits into a bachelor's degree program involving hospitality, nutrition or dietetics.
The culinary arts and baking and pastry arts program is five semesters, including a 4-month paid externship. Students receive 240 hours of instruction in breads, pies, cake decorating, chocolate, ice creams and tarts. The school also offers an advanced baking and pastry arts certificate program for students who have already received education and training in the field. This program also features pastry arts courses and an externship.
Luzerne County Community College
Luzerne County Community College is situated in Nanticoke and features several culinary arts and pastry arts programs. Students can earn a pastry arts certificate or associate degree in pastry arts management. These programs teach students about baking and decorating cakes, purchasing food and menu planning.
Culinary arts programs are available as a 17-credit diploma, 31-credit certificate and 69-credit associate degree. Students in these programs have an opportunity to learn about soup and sauce preparation, sanitation, fish and seafood analysis, baking techniques, cold food production, food purchasing, menu planning and restaurant operations.
Montgomery County Community College
Blue Bell's Montgomery County Community College offers an associate degree program in culinary arts with concentration options in culinary arts or baking and pastry arts. Students in both programs must complete 60 credits and courses in menu planning, food and culture, sanitation and nutrition. Culinary arts courses teach students about making soups, salads, poultry, beef, breakfast foods and vegetables. The baking and pastry arts concentration focuses on baking breads, desserts, cakes and chocolate.
Northampton County Area Community College
Located in Bethlehem, Northampton County Area Community College provides students with the choice of a diploma or associate degree in culinary arts. The diploma program is 46 credits, while the degree program requires the completion of 70-71 credits. Students in these programs receive 1,000 hours of hands-on experience and take courses in restaurant operations; meat, poultry and fish cutting; entrees and vegetables; sanitation and nutrition.
Westmoreland County Community College
This Youngwood college has several baking and pastry arts and culinary arts programs. The baking and pastry arts certificate program is 16 credits and includes courses in decorating, baking and customer service. Students enrolled in the baking and pastry arts diploma program must complete 42 credits. Students seeking an associate degree in baking and pastry arts have to complete 63 credits of general education classes, core coursework and hands-on experience.
The diploma and degree programs offer apprenticeship and non-apprenticeship options. The culinary arts diploma and associate degree programs also have apprenticeship and non-apprenticeship options. Students in both programs take courses in foods, customer service, beverage management, healthy cooking trends and menu management.
