Essential Information

Admission into 3-year Juris Doctorate (J.D.) programs is often very competitive, as highly qualified applicants vie for a limited number of spots. Programs require applicants to earn bachelor's degrees, and each school has its own minimum requirements for undergraduate GPAs. Programs also require students to earn satisfactory scores on the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT). Students will usually need to compose personal statements and obtain letters of recommendation from former supervisors or professors. Students usually spend a large portion of their time reading case briefs and writing legal documents. Students take part in moot court competitions and write for school-sponsored legal journals.

Salary Information and Employment Outlook

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that there should be average job growth of about 6%, between 2014 and 2024 for all types of lawyers, including corporate lawyers. Corporate lawyers usually work for law firms after graduating from law school, though some graduates work directly for businesses as in-house attorneys. According to the BLS in 2015, lawyers earned a median annual wage of $115,820.

Continuing Education Information

While a J.D. degree is usually adequate preparation for a career as a corporate lawyer, some law schools allow students to specialize in corporate law and earn a certificate in the subject. Some students also choose to work as interns at corporate law firms to gain real-world work experience.

There are many requirements for those interested in gaining entry to J.D. programs, such as acceptable LSAT scores. Those interested in corporate law can take specified coursework within these programs.
