There are currently no degree programs that offer cosmetic laser training, but individual courses, seminars, and workshops are available for cosmetology students. Cosmetic laser courses typically focus on dermabrasion, vein therapy, skin treatments, hair removal, and even liposuction.
Additionally, students seeking a degree and certification in optometry may study laser eye surgery, or Lasik. Such courses offer training for optometrists, and those pursuing degrees in this field, to operate laser equipment to correct vision problems. Lasers have several surgical and therapeutic uses, but the list of classes below outlines some of the courses that can provide training in the various cosmetic applications of laser technology.
Here are some of the major concepts you'll encounter while studying cosmetic laser procedure:
- Principles of laser technology
- Lasik eye surgery
- Intense pulse light technology
- Laser resurfacing techniques
- Laser vein therapy
List of Courses
Cutaneous Laser Course
Students in this course study modern lasers, as well as their structure and function. Students examine skin conditions that lasers may be used to treat. Safety tips for using lasers are studied. The course focuses on hair removal lasers, resurfacing lasers and pigmented lesion lasers. Students research bacteria, fungi and diseases that affect the skin. This course is ideal for a student who has begun a fellowship or residency with a medical center.
Laser Eye Surgery Course
Students looking into optometry may consider studying eye surgeries. Lasik eye surgery aides in the restoration of eyesight and reduces the dependence on glasses and contacts. Students study the lasers used, the procedure and the recovery period from surgery.
Laser and Light Therapy Course
Through workshops and courses students study skin types, intense pulse light devices and laser physics. Through research of ablative and non-ablative laser techniques students prepare for hair removal procedures. Complications, treatments and laser safety are studied through case studies, demonstrations and hands-on experience.
Laser Resurfacing Course
Using a CO2 Laser, students learn how to aide in the removal of sun damage and wrinkles in the face. Students learn how to remove the top layer of skin cells in order to promote healthy skin. Laser resurfacing can also aide in the removal of scars, skin discoloration and broken capillaries.
