Jul 31, 2019

Essential Information

Louisiana-based students interested in earning an education in cosmetology may complete a diploma program in order to qualify for licensing. In addition to classroom instruction and theory, students spend a large amount of time learning their trade hands-on, both in laboratory settings and possibly on real clients. Apprenticeships may be available and some schools host on-campus salons where students may work.

There are 5 not-for-profit schools with cosmetology training programs that have been approved to prepare students for state licensure in Louisiana. These schools' curricula and tuition information are outlined below.

Baton Rouge Community College

The cosmetology program at Capital Area Technical College is offered at its Baton Rouge and New Roads locations. Students are awarded a diploma upon program completion, which takes approximately 18 months of full-time study. Aspiring cosmetologists receive training in the school's on-campus beauty salons, where they perform hair relaxing, waving, coloring, cutting and shampooing services - among others - under the supervision of the program's instructors.

Delgado Community College

Located in New Orleans, Delgado Community College's cosmetology diploma program includes 46 credits of coursework. Students learn how to perform hair styling, facial and nail care services. They also study supplementary business topics in salon management and computer applications.

Northwest Louisiana Technical College

Northwest Louisiana Technical College's cosmetology program is offered at the Natchitoches campus. This 51-credit diploma program has basic admissions requirements that include a high school diploma or GED. Enrollment is open every semester, and accepted applicants study hair and skin care techniques in addition to topics in infection control, anatomy and physiology. Practical instruction takes place in the school's on-site beauty salon.

Remington College

Remington College is a private school that offers a cosmetology program at its Lafayette location. Coursework can be completed in 12 months and includes opportunities to compete in styling competitions and participate in community service events. Upon enrolling, students receive a styling kit that includes supplies like a flat iron, hair cutting shears and hair rollers. Students get initial training by working on mannequins and then progress to performing salon services on actual clients.

South Louisiana Community College

After merging with Acadiana Technical College in 2012, this cosmetology program is now offered at the Abbeville campus. The 54-credit program results in a cosmetology technical diploma and includes hands-on instruction and classroom lectures. In addition to hair cutting, treatment and styling techniques, the curriculum covers topics in nail care, makeup and customer service.

Career Requirements

The Louisiana Board of Cosmetology requires aspiring cosmetologists to be licensed before they can provide their services to the public. Applicants must be 16 years of age or older. They also need to complete a board-approved cosmetology training program and pass a state-issued exam.
