Cosmetology training programs are offered by 2-year community colleges and beauty schools in Maryland. These programs can be completed in about a year and a half, though some programs can be completed faster. Programs generally include hands-on training and demonstrations in addition to lectures. Award Beauty School

Students in Hagerstown can pursue a cosmetology program at Award Beauty School. Practical performances and demonstrations are used in this program, along with classroom lectures to help educate students. Not only do students work on their practical skills, but they also learn about the ethics of the business.

Blades School of Hair Design

Students can enroll in a cosmetology program at Blades School of Hair Design in California. Daytime, afternoon and evening courses are available at this school. To enter into the program, a high school education is required, and students must be at least 16 years old. Blades School of Hair Design is a Pivot Point Member School and has received accreditation from the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology.

Empire Beauty School

Empire Beauty School is located in Owings Mills and offers a cosmetology program. The latest hair coloring, hair design and hair cutting techniques are covered during this school's courses. Students learn how to style children, men and women. The coursework here also focuses on communication and marketing skills.

Hair Academy Inc.

Hair Academy Inc. allows students to enroll in a cosmetology operator program in New Carrollton. The National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts and Sciences has approved this program. In addition to practicing hair coloring and hair cutting, students also learn about braiding and braid extensions. Other issues students explore here include manicuring and pedicuring, makeup techniques, chemical services and wigs.

Montgomery Beauty School

Located in Silver Spring, Montgomery Beauty School offers students a cosmetology program. In addition to classroom lectures, students in this program can get practical experience through demonstrations and performances. The program is offered at the start of each month. Students learn how to open and operate a salon, identify scalp and hair problems, administer professional manicures, perform hair coloring and follow sanitation, safety and sterilization procedures.

The Temple

The Temple is a Paul Mitchell Partner School and offers a cosmetology program in the city of Frederick. The program at Temple adopts a 3-phase approach that includes core, adaptive and creative aspects. Students learn about manicuring, fashion trends, makeup, multicultural techniques, facials, hairdressing and pedicuring.

Career Requirements

Maryland requires cosmetologists to be 17 years of age or older and possess at least a GED or a 9th grade education. From there, cosmetologists must complete a 1,500-hour training program at a cosmetologist school. An alternative state licensing route allows students to complete a 24-month apprenticeship at a licensed beauty salon. Out of the 98 postsecondary schools in Maryland, there are approximately 23 institutions that offer cosmetology programs.
