Cosmetology Schools in Texas

Students in Texas interested in cosmetology have a wide range of programs from which to choose. Programs related to the field lead to the award of a certificate or associate's degree; degree programs additionally include general education courses, while certificate curricula concentrate on trade skills. All programs provide students the opportunity to practice their trade, often on real clientele through a on-campus salon.

Del Mar College

The Corpus Christi-based West Campus of Del Mar College (DMC) offers a certificate program in cosmetology. The program's curriculum incorporates courses in hair cutting, chemical reformation, manicuring, and skincare, along with a capstone class that covers topics included on the state cosmetology licensing exam. DMC also hosts 'client days,' which are formal times set aside for cosmetology students to provide supervised hair, skin, and nail services to clients.

El Paso Community College

El Paso Community College's (EPCC) cosmetology program takes place at the school's Administrative Services Center campus in El Paso. Students complete training in nail technology, hair design and coloring, skincare, and hair cutting. In addition, the curriculum includes a course designed to familiarize students with information found on the state exam for licensing in cosmetology. EPCC's cosmetology department houses a service center that allows students to acquire hands-on training by providing supervised treatments like haircuts, manicures, and facials to the public.

Houston Community College

Houston Community College (HCC) offers a number of cosmetology programs among four of its campus locations in Houston. At the school's Northwest College, students can earn a certificate in facial specialist, barber/stylist, cosmetology operator, salon manager, or cosmetology instructor, as well as an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in cosmetology operator, or cosmetology instructor. HCC's Central College houses the certificate and AAS programs in cosmetology operator, and the Southeast College location hosts the cosmetology operator, instructor, and facial specialist certificate programs. The cosmetology operator certificate program is also offered at the Northeast College location. HCC's cosmetology department retains nine faculty members to provide instruction.

Lone Star College System

The full range of cosmetology programs at Lone Star College System (LSCS) takes place at the school's Kingwood Campus in Kingwood and North Harris Campus in Houston. LSCS awards certificates in facial specialist, cosmetology operator, and cosmetology instructor, along with AAS degrees in cosmetology, cosmetology facial, and cosmetology instructor. In each of the AAS programs, students complete mandatory general education courses in subjects like psychology, English, and humanities. The facial certificate and degree programs include coursework in skincare principles and facial technology, while students in the cosmetology instructor programs study clinical operation and progressive levels of instructor training. The cosmetology operator certificate and cosmetology degree program curricula encompass classes in hair design, chemical reformation, and hair coloring theory.

McLennan Community College

Located in Waco, McLennan Community College confers certificates in cosmetology and cosmetology instructor. In the cosmetology program, students receive instruction in such areas as pedicure and manicure processes, hair care, makeup application, and facial techniques. The cosmetology instructor curriculum comprises training in developing curricula, managing a classroom, and evaluating performance, in addition to theoretical concepts in education. An esthetician certificate is also available. Students who graduate from these certificate programs are eligible to sit for the respective state licensing examinations.

Navarro College

Navarro College offers cosmetology and cosmetology instructor certificate programs and a cosmetology AAS degree program at its campuses in Corsicana and Waxahachie. Only students who are licensed to practice cosmetology in Texas may enter the cosmetology instructor certification program. The curricula of both the certificate and the AAS programs in cosmetology incorporate coursework in hair artistry, facial principles, and manicure theory. To earn the AAS degree, students undergo additional study in general education areas, such as math, computer science, business, and English.

North Central Texas College

North Central Texas College's (NCTC) main campus in Gainesville hosts the school's certificate programs in cosmetology and cosmetology instructor. The cosmetology curriculum consists of classes in hair coloring and cutting, salon development, skincare theory, and manicuring. The program also includes a course in which students learn about the content covered in the Texas cosmetology licensing test. In order to enroll in NCTC's cosmetology instructor certificate program, students must already be licensed cosmetologists in the state of Texas. Certificates are also available in nail technology and esthetics.

San Jacinto College

San Jacinto College's (SJC) three campuses in Houston and Pasadena offer a variety of cosmetology training programs. At the school's North Campus in Houston, students can earn a marketable skills achievement award in hairweaving, an occupational cosmetology facial certificate, a certificate of technology in cosmetology operator or cosmetology instructor, or an AAS in Cosmetology Operator or Cosmetology Instructor. The school's other two campuses, Central Campus in Pasadena and South Campus in Houston, house all of these programs except the hairweaving and facial programs, plus an additional occupational certificate program in nail technician.

The certificate program in cosmetology operator includes study in hair coloring, cosmetology fundamentals, haircutting, and state licensing test preparation. The cosmetology instructor certificate program is designed for licensed cosmetologists and encompasses coursework in lesson plan creation, performance assessment practices, and laboratory teaching techniques. In addition to training in these respective areas, the associate degree programs include general education requirements in disciplines like English, math, and social sciences.

South Plains College

At South Plains College's campus in Plainview, students can earn a certificate in cosmetology or cosmetology instructor, and the Levelland campus offers the cosmetology instructor certification program. Cosmetology students undertake coursework in manicuring, haircutting, skincare, sanitation, and professional ethics during the one-year program, while students pursuing the cosmetology instructor certificate receive laboratory and classroom instruction in classroom oversight, evaluation techniques, and lesson plan development. The cosmetology instructor program typically lasts two semesters.

Wharton County Junior College

The Wharton campus of Wharton County Junior College (WCJC) houses the school's cosmetology certificate program. This program comprises study in hair theory, haircutting, chemical reformation, and salon practices. In addition, students take a course intended to prepare them to pass the Texas cosmetology licensing exam. Those who attend daytime classes may complete the certificate program in one year of full-time study; students also have the option to attend classes in the evening, extending the program completion time to 18 months. WCJC's cosmetology department has a faculty of four and offers student-performed hair and nail services to the public.

Career Requirements

Cosmetologists and cosmetology instructors in the state of Texas are required to be licensed in order to practice. To acquire state licensure, one must complete a minimum number of hours in an accredited beauty school and pass a subsequent state-administered exam.
