Essential Information

Virginia-based students can earn a diploma in cosmetology and related studies. This program concentrates its curriculum on hands-on skills; no general education requirements are included. Students may additionally have the opportunity to complete an internship or apprenticeship. Below is an overview of a few Virginia schools that offer cosmetology programs.

Culpeper Cosmetology Training Center

A cosmetology program can be found in Culpeper, at the Culpeper Cosmetology Training Center. It takes about 12 months to finish this program and earn a diploma. The program covers cosmetology basics and prepares students for the state licensure examination. Students take classes in manicuring and pedicuring, facials, chemical rearranging, haircutting, hairstyling, bleaching, hair coloring, shampoos, retail sales and salon business.

Virginia School of Hair Design

At the Virginia School of Hair Design in Hampton, cosmetology students take both lecture-based and practical training courses. Not only do they learn hair styling techniques, such as cutting, shampooing, conditioning, coloring and braiding, but they also study wiggery, manicuring, pedicuring, chemicals and salon business. The program consists of a total of 1500 hours. It culminates in a Mock State Board examination, so graduates should be ready for the real thing when they graduate. In addition to the cosmetology program, the Virginia School of Hair Design also offers a 1500-hour program in Barbering and a 600-hour program that trains aspiring instructors to teach the Cosmetology course.

Staunton School of Cosmetology

Located in Staunton, this school offers its 1500-hour cosmetology program on either a full-time or part-time schedule. Students get personalized attention from instructors as they take theoretical and practical courses in hair styling, as well as business-focused subjects like computer skills, telephone etiquette, appointment booking and customer service. The program also includes life skills training that can help ensure professional and personal success in the future.

Eastern Virginia Career College

The cosmetology programs at Easter Virginia Career College (EVCC) in Fredericksburg focus specifically on hair and nails. In the school's 600-hour Esthetics program, students are introduced to specialized skin care procedures like facials, waxing and makeup application. Graduates are prepared for licensure, and when they earn this designation, they can enroll in the school's Master Esthetics program, which covers more advanced treatments such as microdermabrasion, chemical exfoliation and lymphatic drainage, and graduates can apply for Master Esthetics Licensure. In addition to these broad esthetics programs, EVCC also offers training programs for aspiring nail technicians and wax technicians. Both include hands-on training within these specific subfields of esthetics, enabling graduates to apply their studies directly to job settings.

Career Requirements

Students who are looking to become practicing cosmetologists in Virginia need to meet state licensing requirements. The state requires students to graduate from an approved cosmetology program and then pass a licensing examination approved by the Board for Barbers and Cosmetology. Apprenticeship and training requirements also must be fulfilled; these are generally completed during a cosmetology training program.
