Those who are interested in a general overview of the criminal justice field can pursue a criminal justice academic certificate. This program covers the operation and structure of the different branches of the criminal justice system. Students may also pursue a certificate in homeland security. Private security students take courses in criminal law, administration of justice and criminal investigation. Students following the homeland security curriculum take courses that cover state and local governments, terrorism and diversity issues.

Ocean County Vocational-Technical School (OCVTS)

Students near Toms River can complete a law and public safety technical preparation program that requires 900 hours of training, which typically takes about two years to complete. Students learn how to produce analytical reports, and they also learn about the daily activities of law enforcement organizations. The school recommends that applicants have a strong background in math, science and social studies. Additionally, students who complete the preparatory program can earn college credits at Ocean County College.

Passaic County Community College

Located in Paterson, Passaic County Community College has certificate programs in criminal justice, corrections and emergency management. Students with an interest in becoming private security personnel or criminal justice professionals can pursue a criminal justice certificate and take introductory courses in criminal justice, law and criminology.

Students may also pursue a certificate in emergency management. This 17-credit program trains students in both emergency management and homeland security. Students take courses in forensic science, hazardous materials and terrorism.
