In Utah, criminal justice programs are offered at 2-year community colleges and 4-year universities. Certificate programs might last up to ten months, and associate's degree programs often last two years and consist of about 60 credits. Students of 4-year bachelor's degree programs typically need to earn about 120 credits, while those pursuing a master's degree must complete approximately 36 credits.

While programs at the undergraduate level prepare students to enter the law enforcement and corrections fields, graduate programs might qualify students for research and academic opportunities. Students of some programs can choose areas of specialization, participate in practical training experiences and/or complete a senior thesis. Bridgerland Applied Technical College

Bridgerland Applied Technical College is located in Logan and has a police academy that offers certificate programs for prospective law enforcement officers, special functions officers and correction officers. The programs are 10 months in length and provide students with career training in the field. The law enforcement officer program is 284 hours and consists of law enforcement coursework and practical experience training.

Students enrolled in the special function officer program are required to complete 200 hours of training and study topics involving patrol, criminal investigations and arrest techniques.

Dixie State College of Utah

Dixie State College of Utah is based in Saint George and offers an associate and bachelor's degree in criminal justice. The associate degree program consists of 60 credits and requires that students complete courses in criminal law, criminal investigations and laws of evidence. Students in the bachelor's degree program have the option of choosing specializations in digital forensics or criminology.

The digital forensics option ensures students have an understanding of computer hardware, file systems analysis, networking and small device forensics. The criminology specialization covers topics in police field operations, criminal procedures, drugs and crime, juvenile justice and corrections. A digital forensics certificate is also available, which requires 39 credits of coursework.

Salt Lake Community College

Based in Salt Lake, students at Salt Lake Community College have the option of pursuing an Associate in Science (AS) in Criminal Justice or Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Criminal Justice. The AS program prepares students to transfer to a 4-year university, and the AAS option is designed for students who intend on working after graduation. Students in both programs are required to take courses in criminal investigation, criminal law and laws of evidence.

Southern Utah University

Southern Utah University is located in Cedar City, and students can pursue associate and bachelor's degrees in criminal justice. The criminal justice associate program requires students to complete 64 credits and features tracks in sociology, political science and psychology.

In addition to a traditional criminal justice bachelor's program, the school also offers a forensic science concentration. Students enrolled in the criminal justice bachelor's degree program are required to complete 120 credits and take courses in corrections, criminal justice management, criminology and ethical issues. The forensic science concentration includes coursework in genetics, microbiology, human physiology and criminalistics.

Utah State University

Utah State University is based in Logan and offers an AS program in criminal justice. Students are required to complete 60 credits, and the program is designed for transfer to a 4-year university. In addition to core requirements, students also have an opportunity to take electives in corrections, crime scene processing, juvenile justice, security and criminal procedures.

Utah Valley University

Located in Orem, Utah Valley University has several criminal justice programs at the undergraduate level. In addition to associate and bachelor's degree programs, the school also offers law enforcement certification. The associate degree program is 60 credits and includes courses in criminal law, evidence, forensic science and criminal investigations.

Students enrolled in the bachelor's degree program in criminal justice are required to complete 120 credits and have the option of choosing between a law enforcement or corrections concentration. The bachelor's degree program in forensic science requires 121 credits and teaches students about crime scene investigation, footwear impressions, fingerprint examinations, trace analysis and bloodstain pattern analysis.

Weber State University

Weber State University is located in Odgen and offers criminal justice programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The associate degree program in criminal justice includes courses in criminal law, criminal investigations, forensic science and laws of evidence. The criminal justice bachelor's program features concentrations in corrections, law enforcement, law and justice and forensic science.

Students in the criminal justice master's degree program can complete all 36 required credits of coursework over the Internet. In addition to courses in contemporary criminal justice, crime and delinquency theories and criminal justice diversity, students also have the option of choosing between completing a project or taking additional courses.

Westminster College

Based in Salt Lake City, students at Westminster College can pursue a bachelor's degree in justice studies. The program offers concentrations in gender, ethnicity and justice, critical analysis of crime and justice, economic justice as well as environment and justice. Students in all concentrations must complete a senior thesis and take courses in law and society, criminological theories and contemporary political philosophy.
