Essential Information

Custom fabricated projects are constructed from a wide variety of materials, including metal, fabric, wood, plastic, glass and fiberglass. However, there are few custom fabrication education programs involving materials other than metal, and there are no schools in Wyoming that specifically offer programs in custom fabrication.

Instead, individuals seeking to learn custom fabrication techniques might opt to enroll in a machine tool technology, manufacturing technology or welding program. Studies are offered via undergraduate certificate and associate degree programs. Following are short overviews of six 2-year colleges in Wyoming that offer these programs, as well as a table that compares program options and tuition info.

Casper College

Students interested in custom fabrication can find a number of relevant programs at this 2-year school in Casper. The college's machine tool technology program trains students to work in precision metalworking. They learn to read blueprints and to safely and responsibly use tools common to the machine tool technology profession, including drill presses, horizontal grinders and computer numeric controlled (CNC) lathes. Students can opt to complete a 40-credit certificate program or a 64-credit associate's degree program. The latter includes all of the classes in the certificate program, as well as general education coursework and the choice of a cooperative experience or an advanced class in machining practice.

Prospective custom fabricators also might benefit from Casper College's manufacturing technology program, which awards a certificate or associate's degree. These programs teach students to use various machine tools, including lathes and mills, as well as laser equipment. Other topics of study include CAD-3D modeling, mechanical drafting and numerous welding techniques. The certificate program requires at least 30 credits, while the associate's degree requires 64, including 17 credits of general education courses.

The college's welding technology program also provides students with the opportunity to obtain an associate's degree or certificate. These programs cover the latest techniques and technology in gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) and flux-cored arc welding (FCAW). The degree program requires students to complete general education and welding technology coursework totaling 64 credits. The certificate program consists of 44.5 credits of welding technology coursework.

Central Wyoming College

Central Wyoming College, located in Riverton, offers three welding programs. The 31-credit welding certificate program is designed to teach students entry-level welding skills by providing a curriculum that concentrates on welding technology, including GTAW, GMAW, SMAW and oxy-fuel. The 64-credit associate's degree program includes the courses required in the certificate program, plus courses in welding fabrication, metallurgy and welding inspection, as well as general education classes. The college also offers a 14-credit welding certificate that is designed for students who have prior experience in welding and who wish to update their skills.

Eastern Wyoming College

Situated in Torrington, Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) has 33 welding booths equipped to teach students FCAW, GMAW, SMAW, GTAW and oxyacetylene welding (OAW) skills. EWC is an American Welding Society (AWS) accredited test center, so students graduating from the welding program can become AWS certified. The school offers associate's degree and certificate programs that qualify students for certification. The school also offers a basic welding certificate in plate welding.

Northwest College

The welding labs at Northwest College's Powell campus are AWS certified and provide welding students with a place to learn to weld with traditional metals or plastic. They also can explore robotic welding. The school offers an associate's program in welding technology, as well as three certificate programs in welding technology, gas GTAW and advanced fabrication skills using a CNC plasma-cutting machine. In addition to becoming familiar with safety procedures, students learn multiple cutting and welding techniques, as well as materials evaluation, weld inspection, metal fabrication and pipe welding. Students also complete a welding capstone course.

Sheridan College

This 2-year school in Sheridan is part of the Northern Wyoming Community College District. Its machine tool technology program teaches students to use the tools needed to make various precision parts, while also introducing them to engineering graphics and general welding techniques. Students can choose between a 2-semester Certificate of Completion program in machine tool technology and a 2-year Associate of Applied Science, the latter of which includes general education classes. The school strives to maintain a student-teacher ratio of between 12:1 and 14:1 in its machine tool technology classes and labs to allow teachers to interact closely with students.

Sheridan College also offers certificate and associate's degree programs in welding. Working with state-of-the-art equipment and using all major welding processes, students learn to perform quality welds and cuts, employ industry standards for evaluating welds and gain experience operating metal fabricating equipment. The school reports a 90% job placement rate for program graduates.

Western Wyoming Community College

Western Wyoming Community College in Rock Springs offers associate's degree and certificate programs in fabrication shop welding technology. In addition to learning technical skills that are frequently used in welding, students are taught to read technical schematics and apply fabrication skills. While the associate's degree requires general education courses, the 33-credit certificate program solely focuses on welding techniques and schematics reading. The lab is an AWS-accredited testing facility, and students have the opportunity to become certified in multiple welding processes.
