Database Administration Courses and Classes Overview

Database administrators use network databases to organize information, and some also design Web applications and program basic computer programs. Courses in database administration are typically taken during a certificate or degree program.

Essential Information

Database administration courses are available through certificate programs and associate's, bachelor's and master's degree programs. While some programs focus only on database technologies, there are information systems and information technology degree programs that feature a concentration in database administration or database design.

Much of the coursework is hands-on and involves the completion of projects. In addition, it's common for database administration certificate and degree programs to focus on specific database technology vendors, such as Microsoft or Oracle. As a result, courses may cover database development, administration and management in the context of these vendors' technologies.

Most degree programs introduce students to several core technology areas, such as the following:

  • Basics of major databases, such as Microsoft Access and Oracle
  • Object-oriented programming
  • Java programming
  • Database networking and technology
  • Database design and administration
  • Analysis and collection of data
  • Database integrity and security
  • Backup technologies
  • Collation and presentation of data
  • Web application design and creation

List of Common Courses

Database Theory Course

This course presents database systems theories, models and concepts so students learn how they work. It gives them the opportunity to see where technology could head so they can make moves in that direction as they acquire new equipment for the home or office. Students work with regional database systems and experiment with standard data tables and presentation methods.

Database Administration Course

Students gain a comprehensive overview of all the skills necessary to become database administrators. In addition to practicing existing recovery, backup and network plans, they develop their own. Students learn how to teach and administer tasks to others and set up computer programs that run automatically to check for malicious software or viruses. They gain hands-on experience practicing security procedures and using administrative tools.

Systems Analysis Course

Students learn how to evaluate the computer systems and networks to determine if they are running properly. They fix minor problems and learn to determine when to replace outdated equipment or if it can be restored. This database administration course also includes principles for basic upkeep of all the computer systems so they last as long as possible.

Web Application Database Development Course

In this database administration class, students study current computer and web applications to understand how they're created, what they do and how to use them. Then, they create their own database web applications for easy information sharing and systems updates. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to build and share database applications they've created with others.

Computer Networking, Backup and Recovery Course

Anytime people work with computers, saving and backing up information is necessary. This course introduces steps for backing up information habitually and steps for recovering information that has been lost due to an emergency or from neglect. Students apply methods for examining computer networks to make sure they're secure, set up correctly and free of spyware and other viruses.

Unix Operating System Course

This course familiarizes students with using the Unix operating system. They learn key commands for operating this and other systems. The course also includes using the operating system's design platform, allowing students to practice adding graphics, images and other elements.
