Most dental hygienist online programs are bachelor's degree completion programs. They require prospective students to have earned an associate's degree or certificate from an accredited program.
In an online bachelor's degree completion program in dental hygiene, students often take courses in asynchronous format, which allows them to complete studies at their pace. Students typically access course content through a virtual instructional platform, such as Blackboard. Through this site, they can participate in discussion forums, complete quizzes and exams, submit assignments and send e-mails. While some schools offer this program in a fully online format, other schools offer hybrid programs that require occasional campus visits or combine online and on-campus courses.

The University of Maryland Baltimore College of Dental Surgery's online dental hygienist program accepts not only students with associate's degrees and certificates, but also students who have finished two years of pre-professional courses. The program usually takes two years to complete, but a 3-year option is available. The American Dental Association (ADA) Commission on Dental Accreditation has approved this program.
