Essential Information

Four 2-year schools in Arizona offer dental certificate programs. Certificate programs generally lead to a career in dental assisting. In addition, associate's degrees are also available. Prerequisites for the programs vary. Programs may be offered online or in the evenings. Students participate in hands-on clinicals, and may be able to participate in internships or seminars. In some cases, programs prepare students for licensure or certification.

Mohave Community College

Mohave Community College offers a two-semester certificate in dental assisting at the Bullhead City campus Legacy Foundation Allied Health Science building, which features a state-of-the-art clinical lab. Students gain skills in developing x-rays and assisting dentists through courses in biomedical dental science, dental infection control, radiography, clinical procedures and office management. The school also offers an associate degree in dental hygiene that prepares students for national and state licensing exams.

Phoenix College

Phoenix College offers certificate and associate degree programs in dental assisting. The programs train graduates to expose x-rays, manage the office and assist the dentist with a variety of procedures. The certificate program includes 34.5-42 credits, while the associate degree program is made up of 60 credits. The programs are accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association, and coursework examines dental assisting, dental radiography and dental issues. Clinical practice is also available. Graduates of these programs are able to take the DANB certification exam. The school also offers a two-year dental hygiene degree that leads to licensure.

Pima Community College

Pima Community College in Tucson offers a range of associate degree and certificate programs to its nearly 37,000 students. The community college offers several dental certificates and degrees within its dental studies division. The dental assisting education certificate program is designed to prepare students to assist dental professionals with patient care and is accredited by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation. Students explore the science of dental care and means of dental assisting. Graduates of this program are prepared to complete national certification exams. Individuals who want to continue their studies past the certificate level can apply their credits toward the associate degree in dental hygiene.

The complete dentures certificate program is an accelerated program for a dental laboratory career. It requires 13 credit hours. Students can expect to study dental morphology, non-metallic dental materials, complete dentures and laboratory management. The 18-credit dental ceramics technologist certificate program requires courses in laboratory management, dental morphology and advanced dental laboratory technology.

The fixed bridgework technologist certificate program requires 16 credit hours of courses in areas like dental metallurgy and fixed bridgework. This program can be completed on weekdays, during either the day or evening. In the 17-credit partial dentures technologist certificate program, students learn about dental occlusion, orthodontic appliances and partial denture construction. An associate degree in dental laboratory technologies is also available.

Rio Salado College

Located in Tempe, Rio Salado College offers a Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Dental Assisting program that requires roughly 26 credit hours. Participants must complete prerequisites in composition, biology, communication and CPR training before beginning the required curriculum. Students can expect to complete courses on dental radiographic imaging and dental assisting. In addition, an internship and seminar in clinical dental assisting is required. The program is offered through a distance format and accredited by the American Dental Association. It prepares students for certification in the field. The school also offers associate degree programs in dental assisting and dental hygiene.

Career Requirements

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, some states require dental assistants to become certified by graduating from an accredited program or completing on-the-job training and passing an exam from the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB). While the Arizona State Board of Dental Examiners doesn't require certification for general dental assistants, it does require certification for dental assistants who perform radiography.
