Middlesex County College

Located in Edison, NJ, MCC was established in 1964. Many of its students are enrolled in the school's various health professions programs. Although MCC is an open-enrollment institution, the dental hygiene program admits only about 30 students per year.

Associate of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene

This is a full-time program that takes about two years to complete. Courses cover anatomy, dental materials, oral pathology, periodontology and pharmacology, among other topics. There is also a hands-on clinical component to the curriculum that takes place at the on-site clinic and at various other local hospitals and schools. During the final semester, students can sit for national and regional board exams. Graduates are eligible to take the state licensure exam. The program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). Admission is based on the student's previous science grades, overall GPA and entrance test scores.

Bergen Community College

BCC's main campus is in Paramus, NJ. The college comprises five schools. The dental hygiene program is one of eleven accredited programs offered through the Health Professions Division.

Associate in Applied Science in Dental Hygiene

Students in this comprehensive program are trained in several aspects of preventative oral care. Oral and dental anatomy, physiology, embryology and histology are covered, as are topics in nutrition and local anesthesia. The program is a mix of classroom and clinical learning. Students can hone their skills in the on-campus dental hygiene clinic and at several external sites. The program prepares students to pass the required board and licensure examinations.

Ocean County College

Ocean County College offers a dental assisting program through its Continuing and Professional Education department. This is one of about 20 programs in healthcare offered in this department.

Dental Assisting Program

In this 4-month program, students will study dental anatomy, dental terminology, dental instruments and equipment, infection control and assisting techniques. The programs consists of 6.6 continuing education units, and the cost of the program is $699.

Other School Options

Out of state but about 20 miles from Iselin is the CUNY New York City College of Technology. This is the closest school to Iselin that offers a program in dental laboratory technology. Located in Brooklyn, NY, the school also offers an associate degree in dental hygiene.
