New York State has many schools that offer filmmaking programs, but few that offer certificate and degree programs specifically in digital filmmaking. Digital filmmaking programs train students in the technical and creative skills used in digital film production. These programs are offered at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, with associate's degree programs being most common. Students may be able to transfer into a higher degree program with their credits.

Some programs have focus areas within the subject matter. Students may also get the opportunity to create their own films. Listed below are course descriptions and a comparison table of the three colleges that offer digital filmmaking programs in the state of New York.


Herkimer County Community College

Herkimer County Community College in Herkimer has a digital filmmaking associate's program where students are taught the various stages of production for Internet, DVD and broadcast. To earn the degree, students complete 64-credit hours of courses involving digital photography, computer graphics and electronic media writing, to name a few. Some graduates pursue entry-level positions in the advertising and film industries, while others transfer to 4-year colleges to further their educations at the bachelor's level. Herkimer maintains transfer agreements with the SUNY colleges at Fredonia and Plattsburgh.

New York University

New York University's School of Continuing and Professional Studies in New York City offers various programs in digital filmmaking. Those interested in a graduate-level film education can pursue a Master of Fine Arts in Filmmaking through the Tisch School of the Arts. This 3-year, conservatory program allows students to focus on director of photography, directing/writing, producing or editing. Students in all focus areas create at least four student films.

SUNY Westchester Community College

Westchester Community College in Valhalla offers a 64-credit associate's degree program in digital filmmaking. Coursework covers video production, postproduction, storytelling, film studies, drama improvisation, fiction in film and more. Students also complete 30 credits of general education courses like cultural anthropology and Caribbean history. Upon graduating, students can pursue careers in the film industry or transfer to 4-year programs at nearby colleges. Westchester has transfer agreements with several NY schools, including Brooklyn College and New York University.
