Essential Information

The biotechnology certificate program in the United States (diploma program outside of the U.S.) is well-suited for students who are either working towards a bachelor's degree or who have already completed a bachelor's degree program and want to learn more about biotechnology. Certificate programs are often more abbreviated than degree programs and consist of 7-15 credit hours. A certificate program in biotechnology is not to be confused with entry-level biology programs; certificate programs usually include advanced courses that build upon a related degree program.

Certificate in Biotechnology

Some undergraduate majors that are related to the certificate program include biology, chemistry, and environmental science. Most certificate programs in the field require students to have completed certain undergraduate courses, such as calculus, organic chemistry and general chemistry. Biotechnology certificate courses are at an advanced level and focus heavily on laboratory experience. Coursework includes:

  • Biotechnology laboratory
  • Molecular biology laboratory
  • Microbiology
  • Human anatomy laboratory
  • Physiology laboratory
  • Environmental toxicology laboratory

Popular Career Options

A certificate in biotechnology, when combined with a regular undergraduate degree in a scientific field, can prepare individuals for careers in clinical research, medical research and academic research. Other career options include:

  • Clinical laboratory technician
  • Crime scene or biological technician
  • Biological supplies manufacturer
  • Environmental or food safety technician
  • Infectious disease researcher
  • Pharmaceutical research technician

Job Outlook and Salary Information

While certificate holders might obtain several positions depending on their previous education, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics listed a 7% employment growth for biological technicians from 2018-2028. The mean annual salary for these workers was $49,110 in May 2019.

Current bachelor's program students or graduates can pursue a certificate in biotechnology that focuses on advanced technology and laboratory experience. These students can go on to careers in clinical or academic research.
