Inside Biostatistics

Biostatistics is the application of the mathematical discipline of statistics to the field of health sciences, specifically biology and epidemiology. Biostatisticians design studies that require large amounts of data to be gathered and analyzed, typically utilizing sophisticated software programs. An example may be a study that utilizes various patient data to determine whether a drug or treatment is effective.

Biostatisticians may work for pharmaceutical companies, academic institutions, government agencies and medical research institutions. Some biostatisticians work in public health studying the frequency and distribution of disease within large populations in order to develop preventative measures. Others find careers in teaching and research at the university level.
