Inside Public Finance Management
Public finance managers work in a range of public institutions such as schools, government agencies and charities. Their job titles may include treasurer, finance officer or controller. They are primarily in charge of overseeing investments, controlling financial risks, analyzing financial activity, planning budgets and salaries and creating strategic plans to effectively manage an organization's revenue.
Public finance managers have a variety of educational backgrounds, although degrees in accounting, finance and economics are preferred. They also tend to have prior work experience in the financial field; very few, if any, individuals start out as financial managers.
Individuals interested in public finance management must be able to work independently, be organized, have strong math skills and be able to work long hours. If this type of work sounds interesting to you, look over the following Study.com article links to get more information.

Employment Information
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimated that employment for financial managers was expected to grow by nine percent between 2012 and 2022, which is about as fast as the national average of 11% for all job fields (www.bls.gov). However, applicants will likely face a competitive job market because there will be more candidates than available jobs. The BLS reports the mean annual wage for financial managers as $126,660 in May 2013, with education level, employer and location all affecting an individual's salary.
