Public finance managers work in a range of public institutions such as schools, government agencies and charities. Their job titles may include treasurer, finance officer or controller. They are primarily in charge of overseeing investments, controlling financial risks, analyzing financial activity, planning budgets and salaries and creating strategic plans to effectively manage an organization's revenue.

Public finance managers have a variety of educational backgrounds, although degrees in accounting, finance and economics are preferred. They also tend to have prior work experience in the financial field; very few, if any, individuals start out as financial managers.
