Executive Assistant or Secretary

An executive assistant or secretary isn't the same as it was in your mother's generation. With advances in technology, executive assistants and secretaries are given more complex tasks. Read on to find out about education and career options in this field.

Inside Being an Executive Assistant or Secretary

An executive assistant or secretary is responsible for maintaining organization within an office and for aiding office staff. Some tasks may include answering phone calls and directing them to the appropriate person, making travel arrangements, compiling data or sorting incoming correspondence. Executive assistants may be given more advanced tasks than entry-level secretaries. Most secretaries or executive assistants work 40-hour weeks in places like government agencies, corporate offices, schools or hospitals.

Education Information

Most entry-level secretaries likely have a high school education and some training or experience with word processing or spreadsheet computer software. Assistants to senior level executives in large companies are increasingly being expected to have a college degree in a field like business or one related to the area in which they'd be working. Many community colleges or vocational schools offer 1- or 2-year programs that prepare students to become secretaries or administrative assistants. The International Association of Administrative Professionals also offers certifications that can help you enhance your professional qualifications and improve your job prospects.
